Video: Newt Gingrich Says Unemployment Benefits Violate Declaration of Independence

GOP presidential candidate Newt Gingrich addressed the audience at CPAC this past week and claimed that unemployment benefits "teach people to sit home for 99 weeks and do nothing" (video below).

His unsupported claim brought a huge applause.

Gingrich also claimed that 99 weeks of unemployment benefits, to those who have lost their jobs, violates the Declaration of Independence by somehow stopping them from pursing happiness.

Gingrich made no mention of corporations that receive millions of tax dollars in subsidies and corporate welfare.

The country is not founded on the Declaration of Independence. That document has nothing to say about the law.

Everything I do, I do it for you.

Newt said unemployment benefits "teach people to sit home for 99 weeks and do nothing." Don't worry Newt, I didn't do "nothing;" I decided to work hard following the example of those who have made it in America. I invested some of my unemployment in a credit line at Tiffany's and spent hours laboring over my jewelry choices; and I spent the rest on a trip to Greece for me and my boyfriend, despite others urging me to stay and work on more menial and unimaginative tasks.

How come I'm not rich yet?
