Video: Michele Bachmann Claims Obamacare Will Harm "National Defense"

article image

In Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina yesterday, GOP presidential candidate Rep. Michele Bachmann claimed that Obamacare (Affordable Care Act) would somehow harm America's “strong national defense," which includes more nuclear weapons than any other country (video below).

Bachmann also claimed that Obamacare was "socialized medicine, but in fact medical insurance and care would still remain in the hands of private companies and healthcare providers.

Bachmann said: “Admiral Mike Mullen warned us, the greatest enemy of our national security was not a foreign one, but it was our own national debt. And Obamacare only threatens to exacerbate this problem."

"Because President Obama’s plan for socialized medicine will threaten the very heart of the U.S. economy and endanger the national security of our nation as it drains valuable resources away from a strong national defense.”

Ok, the attack on her is a dim-witted one and a failure to see her point. Unlike those of you on the left, conservatives feel that Obamacare will not save money and will create an ever-expanding drain on our treasury. What she was saying is that the impacting squeeze of money will cause rationing, and that a lot of that rationing will come at the expense of our military budget which will threaten national security. Additionally, Obamacare places a lot of mandates on insurance companies that will drastically increase the cost. The insurance companies will sharply raise their rates in the next few years to compensate and businesses will start dropping coverage for their employees. This will cause insurance companies to go out of business. Not a sure thing, but if they can't get it repealed I guess we'll find out what the impact will be. I believe it will destroy private insurance companies and employer based insurance over the next 15 years. Repeal Obamacare.

The article is not an "attack" on Rep. Michele Bachmann, but an accurate report of what she said, which is not factually true.

The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) has stated that the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) is "deficit neutral." There is no proof, presented by Rep. Bachmann or anyone else, that US defense will be cut to fund the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare).

It is possible that private insurance companies, which have made billions of dollars by refusing coverage once someone gets sick (and possibly dies), may see a loss in their enormous profits.  So it would be justifiable to shed a tear for them, if one feels so inclined.

The CBO can only grade the

The CBO can only grade the numbers presented to them, and the Dems left out some critical numbers on purpose so it wouldn't get a bad grade. The tax increases and cuts figured into paying for it are not gauranteed to be there to actually make the CBO result accurate. Additionally, there was supposed to be over a 20% cut to Medicare doctors and it has already been pushed back 2 years later than it was supposed to. If it never gets cut it will be a loss of $150 billion over the ten years it was projected to save money. The CBO cannot enforce promises made by politicians, and if the past is any measurement then we can make a sure bet that it's going to cost a lot more than projected because of voodoo math. You ever think about what cutting doctor compensation will do? Doctors are already dropping government funded patients like flies. When the cut-backs take place, doctors will become more and more scarce. They might still be there, but not for Medicare patients. Most of what I worry about isn't the cost. I will pay more for a good healthcare system. What I worry about is getting a shitty system that costs a fortune....and I think that's where we are headed. I appreciate you responding to my comment. It's not a "hit and run" article when you are willing to talk about it. That's cool.
