Video: Gov. Nikki Haley Says "Women Don’t Care About Contraception"

article image

South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley (R) appeared on ABC-TV's 'The View' to talk about her new book 'Can’t Is Not An Option,' but was also asked several political questions (video below).

Gov. Haley defended her refusal to take down the Confederate flag that flies over the South Carolina capitol and said she would not be a vice presidential candidate in 2012.

Co-host  Elisabeth Hasselbeck then asked Gov. Haley about her stance on women’s rights.

Gov. Haley responded: “Women don’t care about contraception... they care about jobs, the economy and raising their families.”

She was cut off by Joy Behar who said that women do care about contraception.

Gov. Haley then conceded that while women "might care about contraception," they just want to be able to make those decisions themselves, without government involvement.

She continued making news this week, calling President Obama a "bully" for refusing to agree with Congressman Paul Ryan's budget plan, which would cut medical care for the poor.

This is an obvious attempt by the racist right GOP, to bring the discussion back to the economy because they have losing women voters the battle in swings states. TPM has the latest polls out that state the Obama is KILLING "Flip Jack" Romney in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Florida because women voters have had enough of the racist right.

Tough decision. "Should I pay for my birth control pills out-of-pocket or let my insurance pay for them?"

Reality check: Obamacare doesn't require anyone to use birth control if they don't want to.

For fiscal conservatives: It costs a lot less to pay for birth control than the support of unwanted children.

Buzzbuy-Lets just forget a

Buzzbuy-Lets just forget a little thing called responibility, I don't need the goverment as a nanny and neither should any grown adult that doesn't have some sort of disability. If you wanna have sex condomns only cost about 20-30 cents each and last time I helped my girlfriend buy birth control it was only $20 max a month, that seems like a pretty small price to pay for not having a child you don't want. It doesn't really matter if you don't want the child you should still be held responible at least fiscally until the child has a home.

Is there some reason

Is there some reason insurance shouldn't cover birth control? It saves money for everyone to make contraception available to everyone, especially those who would have trouble affording $20/month in additional expenses.

Martha12's picture

First "they don't care" and

First "they don't care" and then "they might care"...which is it?

Nikki Haley flips faster than Willard Romney.!

If you are paying for health insurance contraception should be covered, if you cannot afford it, it should be made available.

Obama's health care plan asks health insurance to provide contraception...and they are HAPPY to do it because it reduces THEIR costs.

Planned Parenthood provides free contraception as well as counselling to those who cannot afford contraception...not to mention pap smears. mammograms, prostate exams, treatment for STD's etc.

The GOP want to put an end to this .

They promise to abolish Planned Parenthood, and INSIST that health insurance providing contraception is somehow a "war on religion".

THe GOP are waging a "war on women"...and everyone knows it.

The types of legislation that is BEING passed and attempting to be passed is all the proof you need.

From "personhood" to unwanted unwarranted inter-vaginal ultrasounds, which by the way constitues the legal definition of RAPE...is taking over every GOP run state.

They promised to work on JOBS...but THAT was a Trojan Horse.

Contraception IS a women's economy....if you cannot control the timing and size of your family....you will be poor.

You will have children that you don't really want at a given time because you are not financially prepared for them, you will have them at a young age when your body isn't ready, you are too immature and you have not completed an education,

Some will face the fear of death because they have been warned that another pregnancy might kill them ...leaving their family emotionally and financially devastated.

BTW...take down the flag, the south lost the war, the south will NEVER "rise again" and all it does is foment resentment at a minimum, racism at a premium and really...it touches on treason...the stars and stripes is the ONLY national flag ...individual states fly a state flag, but the Confederate flag has no place in current affairs, it is ONLY part of a SHAMEFUL history, NOT a glorified one.

Martha12- Its no ones

Martha12- Its no ones responibility but my own to take care of myself, If I can't aford something I need to work harder/longer or cut my expenses. When Planned Parenthood is limiting my parental right by exposing my child to stuff I want to talk about to them or limiting me from knowing what services they offer to my child I don't think thats right. It is a religious war when you force an employer (for example the Catholic church) to pay in their insurance coverage for something they don't believe in or think its right. If the GOP is "waging a war on women" why are approval ratings for President Obama by women sinking like a rock? Women aren't dumb you shouldn't frame them as such. A condom costs between 20-30 cents, you don't get pregant if youre not irresponible! Some birth control pills are as low as $10 a month at places like Walmart. I believe its the couple's responibility not just the woman to use protection to avoid pregancy. If you want something paid for go out and earn it yourself. Its not the goverments role to take care of you or your healthcare. Read the Constitution! The confederate flag is just that a flag! Who cares, its only racism if you think it is, and liberals do a good job at trying to always frame the US as a racism country. If you think the flag is racism then anything remotely tied to slavery is racism. They should leave it up to remind everyone of horrible war that almost tore this country apart.

"It is a religious war when you force an employer (for example the Catholic church) to pay in their insurance coverage for something they don't believe in"

That's the way insurance works. Christian Scientists pay taxes and paychecks that go towards medical services they don't believe in. I pay taxes that go towards wars I don't believe in. My tax dollars pay for enforcement of drug and alcohol laws I don't believe in. When I buy gas some of that money goes towards oil companies lobbying for things I don't believe in. If you never want to pay for something you don't believe in buy an island and grow your own food. Until then you live in a society with millions of other people and you're going to have to get used to it.

"If the GOP is "waging a war on women" why are approval ratings for President Obama by women sinking like a rock?"

Just saying it doesn't make it true. Obama's numbers among women have been steadily climbing as women realize the GOP thinks of them as no better than farm animals.

"If you want something paid for go out and earn it yourself."

Yes, but I pay insurance premiums so that my insurance company will cover my medication. Why it is unreasonable to expect them to pay for all of my medication in the same way and not just viagra and penicillin.

"you don't get pregant if youre not irresponible!"

Well, unless you're raped. Or if the condom breaks. Or if other medication you're taking reduces the effectiveness of your birth control pill. Actually, come to think of it there are plenty of ways to get pregnant unintentionally without being irresponsible.

"Its not the goverments role to take care of you or your healthcare"

There is no attempt being made to have government distribute contraception. This is simply about regulating health insurance, something government has done for decades. The regulation simply says that insurance companies have to cover contraception just like every other Dr prescribed medication. Why would they not have to do that?

"They should leave it up to remind everyone of horrible war that almost tore this country apart."

Should we hang the German or Japanese flags over the Whitehouse to remind us of that horrible war? We don't need a state capital to hang the enemy flag over their state house to remind us of the war that almost tore the country apart. We have plenty of ignorant rednecks to do that for us.

Truer words were never spoken. I got pregnant on an IUD. (The IUD got pulled out by my doctor the day I found out I was pregnant.) I lost the baby at 8 weeks, sadly, but it just goes to show.

Well Im very sorry for your loss but IUD's have been a medical trainwreck with all the problems that are starting to come out. Using a condom and taking birth control pills on a set schedule seem to work for everyone I know.

And that is the point.

If the GOP has it's way, then religion would dictate everything to us.

THAT is a bad thing. Some religions are so looney that they do not allow medical practice of any sort, depending on prayer instead of tried and true medical practice/treatment.

If the GOP and it's Christo-fascist supporters have their way, then ALL medical care, for everyone will be at the whim of the various religions that every employee has to work for.

So much for the 1st Amendment separation clause, huh?

The insanity principle is doing the same thing over and over again, but expecting different results. The far right, the far left, vegans, creationists and other extremists believe in the insanity principle, religiously.

If your employer doesn't believe in evolution you can only get antibiotics from before bacteria evolved resistance?

If your employer doesn't believe HIV causes AIDS or believes that AIDS is gods punishment for sin can he deny coverage for your medication?

If your employer believes acupuncture can cure any illness or injury can an employer deny you coverage for anything but acupuncture?

If your employer thinks overpopulation is our biggest problem can he deny you prenatal coverage?

Why, in a free country, would anybody but me and my Dr get to decide which treatment is covered?
