Rick Santorum to Puerto Rico: Speak English
GOP presidential candidate Rick Santorum traveled to Puerto Rico ahead of its Republican primary (on Sunday) and lectured the population on a U.S. federal law that doesn't exist.
In an interview with the San Juan newspaper El Vocero, Santorum said that he hoped Puerto Rico would become the 51st state of the United States, but then added "as in any other state, you have to comply with this and any federal law. And that is that English has to be the main language."
"There are other states with more than one language as is the case in Hawaii, but to be a state in the United States, English has to be the main language."
However, there is no federal law that mandates English as the official language of the United States, reports the NY Daily News.
The question of whether to become a state, or remain a commonwealth, comes up to vote for Puerto Rico on November 6, although the final vote is with the U.S. Congress.
The people of Puerto Rico have voted on statehood before and, each time, they have rejected it.

Well, the good thing about
Well, the good thing about Mr. Santorum's advice to the Puerto Rican voters, is that he said to them in Spanish that they need to learn English. Otherwise, they'd have never known what advice he was giving to them.

I've got to point this out to
I've got to point this out to my coworker...
If anything, Washington, DC
If anything, Washington, DC should be the 51st state. They pay taxes AND they have no representation, hence their license plates, "Taxation Without Representation".
Washington D.C. was carved
Washington D.C. was carved out of Virginia so that it would not be part of any state. If we change our mind on that, then D.C. should be put back in Virginia.
D.C. was originally a 10 mile
D.C. was originally a 10 mile square carved from Maryland and Virginia straddling the Potomac River. After the Civil War, the Virginia side of the river faded away.
Today, extrapolating to the past, shows D.C. as a notch in Maryland.
I have no idea what this has to do with Puerto Rico, Santorum's cluelessness on a mythical national language or ???

Why is he campaigning in a
Why is he campaigning in a territory where the people cannot vote in presidential elections?
Is he hoping to drum up support with these people by outright telling them that he doesn't support them getting the right to vote for president? And that if it were up to him, they'd have to change languages? This new "gain support by thoroughly insulting the people you want to support you" is an interesting new tactic, I hope he explores the extremes of just how far he'll be able to take it.
I've already heard far more than I wanted to from Frothy the Santorumman.
Immigrants who come here
Immigrants who come here should learn English. However, with respect to Puerto Rico, the U.S. were the ones who went _there_. So I don't think he's being reasonable. Maybe he thought he was in Spanish Harlem or something.
Earth to Santorum: Learn
We shouldn't have to learn
We shouldn't have to learn Spanish! We live in America where the language IS English!!
Gosh, Deb, take a stress
Gosh, Deb, take a stress pill. I think he might have been talking about Santorum in Puerto Rico.
Hard to believe he was that
Hard to believe he was that dumb. About half the states have made English an official language but it certainly isn't a federal law. And it seems evident that Puerto Ricans don't want to make their territory the 51st state (so why is there a primary there, anyhow?).
A presidential candidate who
A presidential candidate who doesn't even know the basic laws...scary. I knew that the US didn't (and doesn't) have on official language when I was in elementary school.
"A presidential candidate who
"A presidential candidate who doesn't even know the basic laws...scary."
It is obvious you have not looked at our current situation. A president, most of congress and at least 4 Supreme Court Justices that don't have basic knowledge of the Constitution of the United States. Santorum may not be the best presidential candidate around, but at least he is aware of the Constitution and it's limits on our government.
I hope everyday that the
I hope everyday that the republicans pick him as the front runner. Anyone would destroy this guy as he is insane.
Everything I do, I do it for you.
