Rick Santorum Doesn't Understand Tech, Google or Business

| by
In a widely covered news piece, Rick Santorum asked Google to tweak its search engine results to his personal liking. Santorum is unhappy with one of the search results associated with his name, and he has asked Google to remedy what he believes is an issue.

According to the web site http://spreadingsantorum.com/, the definition of the word 'santorum' is a frothy mixture of lube and fecal matter that is sometimes the by-product of anal sex.

What Rick probably doesn't understand is that Google does not control search results, it merely mirrors the what contributors to the Internet find linkworthy. The PageRank algorithm is an automated algorithm which determines which search results are most appropriate for certain search queries.

Santorum probably doesn't understand that this article you are now reading boosts the PageRank of the site that he would like to censor, further sending that specific search result higher in the rankings. I wouldn't mind my own name coming up for 'Rock Star' or 'Most Eligible Bachelor', but the world doesn't recognize me as such.

Google doesn't even filter the anti-Semitic search results for the term 'Jew'. Rather, Google runs an ad explaining why they are offended by the search results they are displaying.

Secondly, I have to assume that Rick Santorum doesn't understand the cost structure associated with dealing with every unhappy person in the world. Google is running a business; it's not a charity. When Google's other customers want to promote content on Google, they pay for it like we all do.

While no monetary discussion was disclosed, I have to assume Santorum did not offer to pay for his requesting services.
