Republican Rick Santorum: We, as Americans, Belong to His God

| by Jerome McCollom

Rick Santorum, failed presidential candidate and former U.S. Senator, has stated "America belongs to God."

Yes, that is what he said.

He believes that we are a theocratic state and that our laws and our government and our institutions and yes, we as Americans belong to his deity. How is this different in anyway than what the Mullahs in Iran believe?

Well, it isn't.

Santorum does not believe that judges can protect the rights of gay Americans to have equality in marriage because, to him, they did not create marriage. He is right, human beings created marriage, but no god created marriage. Marriage was created by human beings to serve the purposes of human beings.

Gays are, of course, fellow human beings who deserve the same rights and protections as everyone else.

Jon Huntsman, former Utah Governor, has supported civil unions for gays and stated that states have the right to have same-sex marriages. He is also a GOP presidential candidate. The division between the two, Santorum and Huntsman, on this issue is as big as the Grand Canyon.

Huntsman can't win the nomination. At least in America today. The GOP is becoming more tolerant, over time, of those who are gay but it is still too rabidly anti-gay and beholden to the religious right to allow someone like Huntsman as their candidate.

Times are a changing though and the more we move away from the theocracy of people like Santorum, Rick Perry and Michelle Bachmann, the better.
