New Haven, CT Mayor John DeStefano Wants Illegal Immigrants to Vote
New Haven Mayor John DeStefano wants illegal immigrants, who live in the city, to be able vote in municipal elections.
DeStefano said on Tuesday that his proposal to the state Legislature would build a more engaged community. New Haven has about 10,000 non-citizen immigrants, reports the New Haven Independent.
DeStefano, a Democrat, said illegal immigrants who pay taxes indirectly through rent and send their kids to New Haven schools and should be able to vote.
New Haven made national headlines in 2007 when the city approved a program that provides municipal identification cards for all residents, including illegal immigrants, to provide access to services such as banking and the library.

In addition to enacting laws, legislatures usually have exclusive authority to raise or lower taxes and adopt the budget and other money bills. I was reading the comment and notice that nobody was defending the opposite side. I am a republican from dallas and feel that immigration is a problem but this might not be the solution. First before anything, does anybody who commented before me have any idea as to why we have endured a mass immigration from people south of the border that began over 30 years ago. This is a question thats never asked, What is the caused (push pull factors ) that has resulted in people leaving everything behind and risk their lives to come and hope for a better life. A person must be left in desperate situations when making that decision. AMerican Cooperations control the agriculture goods that are consumed in mexico and most of central and south america. Before this, many local farmers in these countries were living a comfortable life as many Americans in the mid west, by living off the land and making a small profit by selling to local merchants. This market was shattered when NAFTA was put into effect in the early 90's. As a result many farmers could not compete with the efficient rate of production displayed by the big agricultural cooperations. For instance, meat farmers from mexico who couldn't compete with the AMerican Meat industry immigrate over here and work for the same companies that put them in the situation. The same can be said on whats happening to small business that are trying to compete with Big cooperation. For instance Walmart, we have witness numerous small business that have gone gone under due to the inability to compete with these cooperations. If thats not enough there are few individuals that pursue jobs at the company that destroyed their business. After they control the market they move AMerican Jobs over seas. Where have all the manufacturing and factory jobs gone? They are being outsourced. Where are all our customer service jobs going? Outsourced. we will continue to see more jobs taken from hard working americans and given overseas. Dont call it greedy, it is just good business. Before we blame the the result, lets look to the cause. Forget the War on terror, we need a war on Ignorance.

"Mayor wants"??? This is not Dancing With The Stars. This is a well-defined governmental process, and if the Mayor wants something different, it sounds to me like he is handing in his resignation.

He is not decreeing by fiat, he supports the idea. I still disagree. They pay taxes indirectly; sales mostly since they can't own property or legally earn wages, but so do students. Should a foreign student have the right to vote in municipal decisions? If you extend the law for one, you should do it for the other.
