A Taliban assault on a U.S. military helicopter killed 31 Americans, including as many as 25 Navy SEALS. It was the worst single-day loss of American life since the war in Afghanistan started in 2001, according to a senior military official.

The Chinook chopper was reportedly conducting an overnight raid in the eastern Afghan province of Wardak when it was brought down by a rocket-propelled grenade. The helicopter was also carrying seven Afghan Special Forces troops, one interpreter, a five-member helicopter crew and one dog.

"We are aware of an incident involving a helicopter in eastern Afghanistan," U.S. Air Force Capt. Justin Brockhoff, a NATO spokesman, told the Associated Press. "We are in the process of accessing the facts."
