Authorities say an "out of control" 10-year-old boy was shocked with a Taser and arrested by sheriff's deputies in Pueblo West. The boy's foster father says that the deputies were just doing their jobs. The Associated Press reports:

There isn't enough information in this to be sure what happened! Many 10 year olds are close to adult size, some are very small. Because the boy's privacy is protected, we cannot tell if he is large enough to be easily over powered.

A child who is out of control and has a weapon of any sort will tend to use it without considering the consequences. That means that there is no way for the police to safely secure the child, without hurting him or themselves.

One could wish for a batman-like net to trap a child like this....

They've had several problems with this boy.Have these foster parents done anything to get professional help for for him? There are obviously some serious problems here. I don't think a taser or incarceration is an effective way to deal with an out of control kid. The foster parents are responsible for the care and safety of this child and should be held accountable for not providing mental health care. This situation should not have been allowed to escalate to this point.

you're already close enough to get hit with the pipe or to take it away from him.

Any full grown, physically fit cop, trained in martial arts, as they are, should have no problem dealing with a fourth grader, without the use of a few million volts of electricity.

Excessive force precedent applies.

Alternately, the foster parents should be tasered. Competent guardians don't have these kind of problems.

If someone's defacing property with a pipe then a taser is sure a safe alternative to having your brains sprayed across the ground.

Regardless of what you think of police , anyone can safely say that tasers quite literally safe lives every time they're used instead of anything worse...

Perhaps I am coming to the discussion blinded by the fact that I have a 10 year old son , but I do not think the officer was in mortal danger, even though the boy had a pipe. Tazering the little guy seems excessive... To me.

Also, the foster father is nothing more than a glorified babysitter, for all intents and purposes. I take his condoning attitude with a grain of salt.

The plural of 'anecdote' is not 'data'.

It is probably best not to judge one way or another unless we can actually see what this guy looked like and how the situation was playing out.

Do tasers have multiple settings? If so then a low voltage one would've sufficed for this scenario.
