Planned Parenthood: Abortion Virtually its Only Service
As Jivin J reported earlier, while Planned Parenthood is long overdue publishing its 2008-09 annual report, it has released its 2008 stats for pregnancy related services, as 1st spotted and reported yesterday by American Life League.
They are:
Abortions: 324,008 (up 6.1% from 305,310 in 2007)
Prenatal care: 9,433 (down 14% from 10,914 in 2007)
Adoption: 2,405 (down 51% from 4,912 in 2007)
Let’s show these stats by graph (received from DC source – click to enlarge):
As ALL reported, “Thus PP now commits 134 abortions for every adoption referral.”
Other interesting finds from PP’s 2008 fact sheet, per ALL:
Despite the increase in abortion, PP showed a decline in a number of other areas, including a drop of 4% (almost 100,000 visits) in its primary customer base – female birth control customers.
While PP often emphasizes that it is the only provider of health care in many areas of the nation, primary-care patients accounted for only .1% of its business in 2008.
Finally, back to the big picture:
The total number of abortions committed by PP since it first began in NY state in 1970 is now 4,987,817….
PP is the nation’s largest single abortionist – committing 26.8% of the estimated 1.21 million abortions in the US in 2008. PP also runs the nation’s largest abortion chain, with over 300 medical and surgical abortion facilities across the country.
Here’s another graph. Click to enlarge. You may need a magnifying glass to spot the adoption and prenatal care bars:

Talk about Omission
and misleading the reader, Ms. Staneck takes the cake in this one.
Abortion is only around 3% of what PP does. The rest includes; Contraception and birth control, STD/STI screening and treatment, Cancer screening and treatment, Providing the Primary Care for both men and women, adoption referrals, Pregnancy testing, Prenatal services and so on. And don't forget the majority of the clients they see are poverty level or well below who would not have care otherwise.
The pro-fetus crowd does this kind of "reporting" so often any more that it is their normal M.O.

Deceptive Statistic
I'm a Stats professor at a Community College and I actually used this extremely distorted Stat as an example of how people lie with Statistics. My class found it rather entertaining as they knew immediately that it was fabricated.
I don't consider myself at one end or the other on the spectrum of abortion (I favor it in certain circumstances, yet believe there do need to be valid restrictions (i.e. gestational age)). At the same time I do believe that organizations making up completely deceptive Statistics such as these hurt their cause more than help it. Pointing fingers and blaming Planned Parenthood only is not going to solve any problems. How about let's work to reduce unintended pregnancy rates in the first place rather than just play the blame game.
Bad reporting, as always
As always, Ms. Stanek reframes the debate to fit her agenda. Abortion is not "virtually Planned Parenthood's only service." Abortion is its most common (and yes, virtually only) service provided to PREGNANT WOMEN. I do not wish to engage Ms. Stanek in an abortion debate; such would be an exercise in futility and an embarrassment to Stanek herself.
Just last week, I went to my local Planned Parenthood clinic for a full physical. I only have emergency health insurance (like if I got hit by a bus), so I paid completely out of pocket. I received a pap smear, pelvic exam, thyroid check, blood pressure, urinalysis, blood work, breast exam, and pretty much anything else a woman of my age would get at a physical. I paid $97. Total. I get my monthly birth control at Planned Parenthood for cheap. I get free condoms at Planned Parenthood.
The clinic near my house does not provide abortions. If abortion is "virtually their only service," what the heck does my local clinic do all day??
Agreed
While Ms. Stanek's cause is certainly just, it is unbecoming to both her and her cause to so grossly misrepresent the data.
Whether these numbers are accurate I'm not sure, but they're the figures cited by the report cited in this article ....

The Numbers
Conveniently not mentioned by Ms. Stanek here are that abortion services overall accounted for 3% of PP's services. 35% went into pregnancy prevention, 34% into STD treatment/testing/prevention, and an additional 17% went towards preventative care (pap tests, health exams, etc).
Stanek only chose to report on the services provided to pregnant women. Which, I'm sorry, is what people go to Planned Parenthood for when they're pregnant... PP is not an adoption agency, and it is not an obstetric prenatal practice.
Hey Stanek, guess what? I just did a ground-breaking survey of private obstetric practices and I found that virtually *all* the clients were prenatal clients! AMAZING!!!!
