Website Deadline.com reports that Jackson will take over from from Mexican Guillermo del Toro, who bowed out of directing the project a few weeks ago.
According to the website, “his deal is being negotiated right now with Warner Bros, New Line, and MGM.”
Jackson’s manager, Ken Kamins, reportedly told the same website at the beginning of June that the the Kiwi director’s packed schedule and other film commitments would make it “impossible” to take on the project.
“Peter has and has had obligations and commitments to other films that would make it impossible for him to direct The Hobbit at this time, even if it was offered, which it hasn’t been.” his manager said.
Jackson and fellow screenwriting partners Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens are believed to be jetting off to London and Los Angeles in July to cast talent for the project.
