PETA Goes Too Far With Nude Ad of Che Guevera Granddaughter

Although I am opposed to all violence, and, therefore, I do not
approve of the violence that Ernesto “Che” Guevara used to liberate
Cuba from the U.S. backed Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista, I found it
profoundly sad to see the latest PETA campaign that features Che’s
granddaughter, Lydia Guevara, posing semi-nude in a PETA campaign ad promoting the “vegetarian revolution.”

This ad trivializes the struggle for social justice that Che
believed in and for which he gave his life. Can you imagine Che Guevara
“going naked for liberation rather than be a U.S. puppet?” No, of
course not.

In 2007, PETA put out its State of the Union Undress, a video of a woman doing a full striptease “for the animals” that ended with a quotation from Dr. Martin Luther King.

In my comment on the PETA video, I stated:

The idea that PETA thinks it appropriate to end a
striptease video with a quote from Martin Luther King about injustice
is further indication that PETA is willing to trivialize anything and
anyone in its relentless attempt to promote itself. Perhaps PETA should
recall that Dr. King significantly advanced the cause of justice
through intellect, tenacity, dignity and courage and without ever
“going naked” to win civil rights or engaging in any of the
sensationalism and tawdry cheapness that has become PETA’s trademark.

This is the problem with all of PETA’s pathetic attempts to liken
its campaigns to civil rights struggles or other struggles for social
justice. The people involved in those struggles were serious people who
made serious sacrifices and tried to effect fundamental changes in the
way that people think. PETA is doing nothing more than seeking
publicity and donations for itself. That is unfortunate.

Moreover, it is tragically ironic that PETA is using sexist imagery when Che Guevara, a committed Marxist, rejected sexism.

But I guess that in the end, it does not really much matter as I
suppose that most of PETA’s membership has no idea who Che Guevara was.
To the extent that people in other parts of the world remember Che,
they will, like me, feel profound sadness at this campaign. And
unfortunately, many will use this silly publicity stunt as an excuse
for dismissing animal rights as a serious issue.

Che Guevara was not a vegetarian. Perhaps, had he lived, he would
have come to see animal rights as a serious social issue. I doubt,
however, that he would have been prompted to do so by PETA’s cheap,
sexist campaigns.

Celebrating the human body and exploiting it are two very different things. It is possible to celebrate the human body through art, and I have done this as an artist. What PETA does is nothing close to art. It is pandering.

PETA exploits women in order to convey the message that exploiting animals is wrong. This is conflicting message because it begs the question, why should women be treated as pieces of meat when animals shouldn't?

I'm with Gary Francione on this. As a proud vegan and feminist, I am extremely dissapointed in PETA. I do not believe in objectifying anyone for the sake of exposure.

Yet regardless of some diatribe of Gary's about PETA, the reality is that Gary's points themselves are insidious, as they imply adult women are incapable of selecting such photo shoots with genuine consent, regardless of whether it is paid, donated, or even the model's idea, and also donated. In PETA's photo-shoots, the models volunteer their time, and do not "sell" it.

Studies have shown men and women who were sexually abused as kids falsely identified consensual sexual scenarios shown on tape as an unwarranted assault, or without mutual consent.

So, it is not surprising many people, given the rate of sexual abuse, often have a particular difficulty when it comes to discerning the very gray area of what distinguishes a playful phrase with a suggestive pun and attire from what symbolizes the reason why men abuse and rape women. This is not targeted at Gary, but a simple mentioning of what is in the literature, and does influence what a particular branch of feminism may be driven in party by.

Gary's comments may be led by freakish, cynical and humorless slideshows, and they do exist, if you have ever seen these feminists at a conference show one. These things took a few years of de-programming to realize girls who actually like guys don't view it as a compliment to be seen as devoid of any sexual identity.

They're the least healthy element within feminism today, and it's only set to get more extreme, and more unhealthy and cynical. If you assume and seek out the worst in a photo or group or idea, you will find it. We see things as we are, not as they are.

This sort of apologetic, pedantic feminism is borrowed from the old school of feminism. It's from the same school that told us that the female body is to be balked at if it is not shrouded up in a burka.

Sorry, celebrating the female form in such a tasteful way as this one is not pornography , and no reasonable person is going to pretend as much. I can't imagine what this writer would have thought of Andy Wharol's art films.

If you wish to conflate a bag of potato chips to the cause of curbing animal cruelty , I'm not going to pretend you are capable of being convinced those are not the same thing. I advise returning to your latest issue of AdBusters. Good day.

Considering that man's relentless pursuit of the perfect hamburger & chicken wing, is a major contributor to the demise of this planet, I am touched that Francione is upset by a little sexist fun. Shall we balance the deforestation of the rain forests for American hamburgers, the hormone damage to our chicken eating kids , breasts on Mexican men in the chicken villages, pubes on 9 year olds, heart disease, starvation, drought, global warming , the rise of unnatural diseases, etc., against this "cheap, sexist, campaign"? GIVE ME A BREAK! PETA's struggles, whether intentional or not, so transcend Gary's superficial concerns, he gags me with his triviality.
Vegetarianism is revolutionary. It is an opportunity for everyone of us, the meek, the mild, the monsters, of this word to be a global Che Guevera. No guns , no war, just broccoli. Gary; You're trying too hard to be macho cool here, leave the sexist outrage to the target sex.
