PETA Disappointed by Obama's New Dog
We're disappointed to report that, although the Obamas had publicly expressed their intention to adopt a dog from an animal shelter or rescue group, they have instead accepted a Portuguese water dog as a gift from Sen. Ted Kennedy.
Let us be clear: The new first dog, Bo, is not a rescue. While he was returned to the breeder by his first owners, that subtle point is missing from or buried in most news reports and is no doubt lost on the masses of people who will be lining up at pet shops and demanding "Obama puppies." These puppies will eventually lose their appeal, once people get tired of taking care of them, but because most pet shops and many breeders don't take "returns," guess where those unwanted "Obama puppies" are going to end up? At extremely crowded, overworked shelters like D.C.'s Washington Humane Society (WHS).
Speaking of which, the Obamas have promised to make a donation to WHS, which is great, but, as we told the President in a letter we sent today, WHS doesn't need his money as much as it needs his business (i.e., going in and adopting a shelter animal)—and the business of all the people who do what Obama did just because he did it.
The Obamas can't undo their missed opportunity to set a great example for Americans by adopting a shelter dog, but they can still set another important example: They can arrange for the first dog to become the last dog in his lineage by having him neutered. We've offered up our mobile clinic's services for the first "snip" and will let you know if the President takes us up on our offer.

Living in Norfolk Va which is the location of the headquaters of PETA I have seen first hand how little PETA does for needy animals in the area. I think I have seen more PETA volunteers at the local KFC protesting than helping out pet owners that need help finding homes for animals that they want to avoid turning over to a shelter. Not to mention thoes of us that are local have not forgotten about how PETA was adopting dogs from animal shelters only to euthanize them in the basement of their HQ then driving to North Carolina to dump their bodies in dumpsters, where they were caught redhanded!!! YEAH we still remember!!!
What's sad is that people are more up in arms about killing an animal than people who are starving, being killed, and being exploited all over the world. The president got a dog, good for him. Shouldn't you wish his kids good luck and enjoy their dog as opposed to smashing him over something so stupid? I believe PETA is just looking for attention anyway they can get it. Even when they make themselves and others look like fools
I now believe Obama and Biden jumped on the "I hate Sarah Palin because she hates animals " bandwagon. I believe that they saw a big " vote opportunity" and used animal lovers, a huge population, to get votes. Biden last month bought a German Shepard and now Obama gets a phoney "gift" from Kennedy. Oh, and a $2000. puppy returned to a breeder is re-sold, prob. to Ted Kennedy, we'll find out, the breeder is talking. This is a very very sad day, we have a liar for a President and one who doesn't care that he may as well have pulled the gas levor on the millions of animals that will die this year in the shelters. What an unethical and selfish administration. Disgusted!!!
How is the breeding &/or ownership "pulling the gas lever" on millions of animals in shelters?Realistically? I don't think even the President could possibly own that many animals for one! You can't hold him responsible for other peoples rash actions. If anything i think he's setting a POSITIVE example. If people were responsible in the first place we wouldn't have millions of animals in shelters. The vast majority of dog breeder's do not breed for profit & are responsible, considering that more than 90% of animals who end up in shelters are NOT pedigree & are not trained or socialized by unthinking, uncaring, irresponsible owners!! Would it not make more sense to ban the sale of animals in pet shops to combat impulse buying, eradicate puppy farms & introduce compulsory de-sexing for all animals not owned by registered breeders? The biggest problem is people who are uneducated & organizations like PETA are undoing what little progress that has been made in educating people. RESPONSIBLE DOG OWNERS CHOOSE THE RIGHT DOG FOR THEIR FAMILY & DE-SEX THEIR PETS!!
