On Eve of Copenhagen, is Climategate World's Biggest Hoax?

On the eve of next week's Copenhagen climate summit, the evidence couldn't be more embarrassing for proponents of global warming, says the Calgary Herald. Leaked e-mails from the University of East Anglia's Hadley Climate Research Unit (CRU), one of the world's leading climate change research centers, indicate that prominent scientists cooked the books to make the case for man-made global warming.

Misconduct at an institute as respected and influential as Hadley -- including the manipulation and deletion of data and deliberate attempts to suppress peer-reviewed papers skeptical of global warming, as the e-mails indicate -- would undermine the very basis of an issue that is driving much of the world agenda.

Global warming, endorsed by the national science academies of every major industrialized nation, would not only be flawed science, it would be the biggest hoax ever perpetrated on the world, says the Herald.

The e-mails indicate an agenda-driven willingness among a group of like-minded scientists to influence what research gets published:

  • In one 2003 e-mail, a scientist suggests boycotting the journal Climate Research, and manipulating its editors or getting them fired, for publishing articles contrary to the views of the Hadley CRU.
  • In another message, the head of the Hadley climate unit, Philip Jones, wrote that he would try to exclude papers written by climate skeptics from a 2007 report by the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
  • He vowed in the e-mail to "keep them out somehow--even if we have to redefine what the peer-review literature is!"

If he wasn't kidding, Jones's e-mail, and others like it, are distressing, says the Herald. On Tuesday, Jones announced his resignation while the school investigates the e-mails that indicate scientific and professional misconduct have been perpetrated by Jones and others.

Even those who accept the need to act on the theory of man-made global warming can't deny that all science should be allowed to speak for itself. Nothing should be suppressed, says the Herald.

As U.S. climatologist and global warming skeptic Roy Spencer notes: "Year after year, the evidence keeps mounting that most climate research now being funded is for the purpose of supporting IPCC politics, not to find out how nature works. The 'data spin' is increasingly difficult to ignore or to explain away as just sloppy science."

The evidence for global warming does not rest on the results of a single temperature set, or the work of a few scientists... it is the result of decades of climateological research.

If you are going to challenge global warming the do so with evidence, not manufactured controversy.

This may be as you say, but the Mann hockey stick graph is wrong and based upon data that doesn't exist. Also, if all of this is about robust discussion then why ask others in this group to destroy all data and emails? Why is that even on the table? Also, if the data is real why avoid giving access to other scientists? I could have believed your stance if somehow one could explain these emails and these actions. But facts based upon inaccurate or manipulated data are not facts anymore. The damage done to science with these emails and frankly the arrogant attitudes of those involved toward other theories is huge. Trust has been broken and it affects all scientists and scientific endeavors by these scientists to whom everyone looked to for corroboration of their research. Their data and results are now suspect especially with the amount of money involved in the grants, positions, and research being done. The only way out is to redo this research and show that what they say occurs does occur. Especially, when you have them admitting in their own words that the data does not show what they expected. By the way I am not involved in any way shape or form with any group. I am just your average citizen who can read for himself what the emails present. If you really want us to believe that global warming exists (and I did before this occurred) then present us with the research in its full form otherwise all this is just theory and no more valid than the skeptics viewpoints that this is not caused by human beings. We have so many idiots telling us on the internet what to do from we must get rid our dog because he creates a greater carbon footprint than an SUV to we should stop eating meat because it causes global warming. We are expected to change our lives based upon research that could not prove itself? If you believe the facts then show us the data and how you arrived at this new religion about the world coming to an end. You don't even know if these changes will be good or bad. In fact you don't even know what changes will occur. All of this is theory. This is a sad day for science and making supportative statements for those involved does not change a thing. Show us the research, the data and how you arrived at this new belief system. We can read. We also know something is very wrong when the so called top group from which everyone else got their data lied about the results and tell each other to get rid of the original data and their emails.

Inaccuracies in one graph made nearly a decade ago do not invalidate the entire body of research on this subject.

"We have so many idiots telling us on the internet what to do from we must get rid our dog because he creates a greater carbon footprint than an SUV to we should stop eating meat because it causes global warming . We are expected to change our lives based upon research that could not prove itself?"

And those are just internet idiots... only other idiots listen to them seriously.

With the recent predictions of cooling by those who relied on fluctuations in solar activity why wouldn't they try and hide the decline?

Maybe we're supposed to forget about it all a few decades from now...
