An unidentified man was stuck in his burning fifth-floor apartment in New York City on Monday with apparently no way out.

The man actually considered jumping from his window to escape the flames inside.

“Everybody was saying to him, ‘Don’t jump, don’t jump, wait, wait,’” witness Freddy Morales told NBC New York.

Fortunately, the man did not jump and his amazing rescue was shot on video (below) by people who lived in an apartment building across the street.

One building worker tried to push a metal ladder to the man's apartment window, but he was too nervous to step onto it.

Then the worker laid the ladder across his fire escape and the window below the fire victim's apartment to form a makeshift "bridge."

A second worker then dropped down from the fire escape onto the ladder, walked across the ladder and helped the man out of his window and onto the ladder, where they slowly inched back to the fire escape.

The rescued man was taken to a hospital and was in stable condition.
