Roger Mirro was crushed to death in a trash compactor while searching for his missing cell phone in Palatine, Illinois on Tuesday.

Mirro told a neighbor in his apartment building that he might have dropped his cell phone down the building's garbage chute (video below).

According to the Chicago Tribune, Mirro asked for a key to the trash room, which is located in the apartment's parking garage.

However, his wife called police almost four hours later and said Mirro was missing at around 9:30 p.m.

Police officers searched the parking garage and the trash room. The cops saw a ladder standing next to the trash compactor with Mirro's body inside it.

Mirro died of injuries caused by the machine, said the autopsy.
