A pickup truck in Alberta, Canada, was recently struck by a lightning bolt, creating a terrifying fireball that engulfed the vehicle.
The incident happened on a highway last Saturday and was caught on video (below) by a surveillance security camera, noted KTTC.
The Chevrolet pickup truck’s airbags inflated, the truck began to melt and smoke filled the inside of the cab. The electronic doors and windows were locked.
“It’s an awful feeling to have,” Al Perry, who was in the truck with his wife Betty, told CTV. “I saw our lives passing before my eyes. It sounded like a sonic boom."
“I put my two feet up against the window and I tried to kick the window out... I don’t know how many times I’ve tried and tried and tried,” Al recalled.
Fortunately, a police officer was nearby and witnessed the lightning strike.
“I’ve never seen anything like that. I’ve seen them off in the distance, hit trees before, but never like that,” said Constable Brian Jamont, who jumped out of his car and rushed to the pickup truck.
“I couldn’t see in the cab of the truck, it was full of smoke,” added Jamont. “As I approached the driver’s side, the gentleman inside was trying to kick the window out. He couldn’t get it kicked out.”
Jamont used his baton to smash out a window and help the couple out of the vehicle.
