Hoarder Dies After House Floor Collapses Under Weight of Junk

| by Michael Allen

Beverly Mitchell, 66, was found dead under a pile of junk and debris that she had been hoarding inside her Cheshire, Connecticut, home for years.

The house floor collapsed into the basement because of the weight of the ceiling-high garbage that she had collected, notes Mediaite.com.

Mitchell's postman noticed her mail was piling up and notified police, who performed a welfare check.

Police could not enter through any of the home's doors, so they cut through the side of the house to enter the junk-filled residence last Thursday, but did not realize the floor had collapsed until Friday.

The disgusting debris was so thick and massive, Mitchell's body was not found until Saturday.

Police officers had offered to get Mitchell help from social workers, but she refused each offer, and chose instead to live in her dangerous, dilapidated home.

"It's unfortunate because... we've tried all along to get her assistance, but she was a very private and solitary lady," Cheshire Police Sgt. Kevin O'Donnell told WCVB.

Police were still trying to find Mitchell's relatives on Sunday.
