Obama Trades Abstinence Education For Condom Teaching

President Barack Obama wants to eliminate $133 million for abstinence education, but pour an additional $150 million into "comprehensive," condom-based sex education.

His 2010 proposed budget kills funding for Community Based Abstinence Education (CBAE) and the Title V Abstinence Education Program, the two main abstinence-education programs.

Recipients of CBAE funds — the largest funding stream for abstinence education — include pregnancy centers and charitable organizations throughout the country. Currently, at least 1 million students are taught abstinence under CBAE.

Valerie Huber, executive director of the National Abstinence Education Association, said: “At a time when teens are subjected to an increasingly sexualized culture, it is essential that common-sense legislators from both sides of the aisle reject this extreme attempt to defund the only approach that removes all risk.

"Members of Congress would be well-advised to listen to youth and parents in their districts who overwhelmingly support these valuable programs."

The federal government currently hands out $4 for contraceptive-based sex education for every $1 it spends on abstinence education.
