A New York City television weathergirl is under fire for allegedly reporting a false rape attempt. According to its Web site, WABC-TV has suspended Heidi Jones from her position at the station while it investigates.

It all started on September 24, when Jones claimed that while she was jogging in Central Park that day, an Hispanic man grabbed her from behind, dragged her to a wooded area and tried to rape her. She said he was scared off when two people stumbled onto the scene.

However, Jones didn't report the alleged attack to police until November 24, when she said the same man somehow found her again three days earlier, telling her "I know you went to the police."

Police conducted a lengthy investigation, canvassing the area for video and witnesses. But they came up empty. They spoke to Jones again, and they started to noticed certain inconsistencies in her story.

Sources say Jones, when confronted with the discrepancies, admitted she made up the whole thing.

The New York Post reports that she made up the story in a plea for sympathy to counter an unknown setback that she was experiencing in her personal life,

The 37-year-old Jones is charged with filing a false report, a Class A misdemeanor. If convicted, she could face up to a year in jail or a $1,000 fine.
