Not Pretty: Animal Planet Investigates Petland
By Wayne Pacelle
It’s been a while since I last blogged about Petland, the nation’s largest retail supporter of puppy mills, but our campaign to urge the pet store chain to change its ways is ongoing. Advocates are still demonstrating in front of Petland pet stores regularly.
Legal actions against the company are still in play. And sadly, heartbroken puppy buyers still write to us just about every week about sick and dying puppies they’ve purchased from Petland stores. We’re committed to sticking with the fight for as long as it takes to stop the company’s role in funneling puppy mill dogs to an unsuspecting public.

And on Monday, Animal Planet will broadcast details of our investigation to the American public, revealing new, never-before-seen footage of the battle to expose pet stores and their connections to puppy mills. On Monday, May 17, at 10 p.m. ET/PT, Animal Planet's new special “Animal Planet Investigates: Petland” explores the relationship between Petland and puppy mills—following our undercover investigator “Mike” as he visits overcrowded, inhumane puppy mills that have sold puppies to several Petland outlets. The program also features heartbreaking stories of families affected by Petland's involvement with these mass-breeding facilities.
It’s time for Petland executives to face facts and make the policy changes needed to halt the cruelty of puppy mills. Please tune in or set your recording devices and also ask your friends to watch “Animal Planet Investigates: Petland.” And if you’re on Facebook, help spread the word by RSVPing there to say you’ll be watching the show.

It is unfair to blame the name of PETLAND for the actions of the owners of these shops. Each owner of thier private shops acts on their own free will. Not ALL Petland stores receive their puppies from puppy mills. Also to add , just because a puppy is brougth from a puppy mill does not mean that it the reson for their illness. Puppies get sick and some our born with medical issue, just like human kids . Puppies can get sick evven if not from a puppy mill. It is not the name of petland, but the people who work there themselves. Some do not give them the needed care puppies need. When a child is sick you give them medcine and keep them insdie so not to infect others. If you do not treat your puppies illness and do not take the important steps to sanitazing afterwards, it is most likely that you are going to infect the other puppies. So this infact is not Petlands fault persay, but more so SOME of the employees who work that do not take the proper time and care the puppies need.
I myself am a huge animal lover, I own five cats and one dog and had two horses. Out of the my five cats, only one has been bought fromt he pet store, and the other four plus my dog were rescues. I currently work in a PETLAND store, in the kennels. If we get a puppy from our breeder, with a bad hip or something, we send him back. All our puppies get meds until we are sure thaty their syster is clean. We also check for fleas and ticks right when we get them. We also have a vet come look at them the day we get them. We make sure they are well cared for. Respiotry infections are common in kennels. If one of our dogs recive it, we place them in a isolation room and place in the nebbalter machine as well as give them meds. They are not put out on display untill the vet permits it. Until the pup is clear up of it infection. On top of it, In the morning we have to be at work before the shop even opens, hours before. We make sure all the puppies are waking up, we check their poo and if someone is not looking good we keep an eye on them. We clean out their kennels with extrem care. NO CROSS CONTAMINATION. SANITAZATION is number one in our store. We have to clean our hands before and we handle a puppy.
Not only that, but all out puppies our treated with love and care, just as if they were our own. We spoil our favorites sometimes, but taking them out of their kennels and playing with them, or giving them an extra toys. They are like our babies and we are their mothers . We are the ones who make sure they get their medcine, they get there food and keep an eye on them to assure they are healthy. We bath them and give them our love and as much as some of us start to get attach, deep down inside we want all our little babies to get loving homes.
AND so you know, it is common for some breeds of dogs to have hip or knee problems, just like some breeds have problems with breathing and may need surgery for it. Like pugs and shitzu', because of their smooshed in faces, they nasal issues. It is just they way they were born and it has nothing to do with puppy mills. And it is also common for puppies and kittens to get kennel cough in a kennel.
I do not have Animal Planet. does any one know where i can veiw these reports??
I'm not sure if/when the Animal Planet special on Petland will be rebroadcast, but check out www.stoppuppymills.com for lots of information about this issue, including the HSUS investigation of Petland.
