NORML Waste: Kicks Roger Christie While Down

NORML's most public representatives have decided to launch a public attack in High Times magazine and on NORML's website against an imprisoned activist who sits in federal custody and is being wrongfully denied bail for a small amount of marijuana.

It is dismaying that NORML would choose to focus limited time and resources denigrating its own community and creating schisms instead of building a viable coalition for political change. In picking this ill conceived public battle, NORML has chosen to kick a long-time activist, who happens to be a very good man, while he is down.

Roger Christie is being held without bail since July 8, 2010 by the federal government in Hawaii for his advocacy for cannabis and its religious use. He is the founder of the THC Ministry, which uses cannabis as a sacrament.

Roger is a 61 year old man who has never been convicted of any crime before, and now the government has charged him with manufacturing and distributing cannabis to his church members, with no weapons, minors nor violence involved. The federal government claims that this makes him a danger to the community. Roger is one of 14 co-defendants, the Green 14, charged with selling marijuana and arrested with about 2 pounds of cannabis. The feds are holding Roger without bail until his trial in a year. It is amazing how much money and time they put into prosecuting Roger, a 61 year old, first time, non-violent cannabis activist.

The federal government tapped 17,000 phone calls, created and have printed 30,000 pages of transcripts, then they used a military jumbo-jet/C-130 to haul 14 people and dozens of police agents the 300 miles from Hilo to Honolulu. The federal government is doing this because Roger is very public. Roger helped organized and get a county/Big Island of Hawaii law passed making marijuana the lowest priority of the Big Island. Roger helped get the Big Island municipal government to reject federal funding for Operation Green Harvest, a 24 year old federal pork project to fly helicopters at low altitude around Hawaii searching for cannabis. Roger's ministry was located right on the main street on the waterfront in downtown Hilo, Hawaii. So the feds have hauled him to Honolulu, on a different island, and they are holding him without bail.

I have known Roger Christie for well over 20 years. I first met him when he came to the first North American hemp conference in 1988 in Portland and I let him stay in my house. He is a good, honest man who used the few resources he has worked for to help others. The federal government is holding him without bail, saying that he is a danger to the community.

Roger and 14 others were arrested with about one kilo of cannabis, or a little more than 2 pounds of marijuana. Several of the Green 14 co-defendants are homeless people. The day before Roger was imprisoned without bail on July 8th, he performed a wedding at Kalapana, which is what community spiritual practitioners do. I am fortunate to have visited Roger while I was in Hilo helping patients, seeing friends and gawking at the active volcano regularly over the past 5 years. Roger helped his community as he saw best.

It is outrageous that the federal government is holding Roger under the guise that he is a danger. Roger is a blessing to his community, not a danger.

It is outrageous that NORML uses its precious time & resources attacking a good man while he is down. It is outrageous NORML uses its resources attacking a person it should support. As a long-time NORML donor and supporter, and the past Washington state director of NORML (1982-84), I disagree with this poor decision. It is sad to see that NORML and its representatives have chosen to emphasize this poorly rationalized schism at all, no less publicly, to the detriment of reform and building a viable coalition.

Cannabis is the oldest known cultivated crop and produces more food, fuel, fiber and medicine than any other plant per area cultivated. Science verifies that it was an integral part in the prehistoric origins of most of the world's major religions, as Chris Bennett has documented so well. That NORML would denigrate, ridicule and publicly rebuke Roger Christie and the spiritual significance of cannabis is harmful for our mutual cause.

Yours truly,
Paul Stanford

i forgot something...

even if roger tries the whole freedom of religion to spoke pot routine, it wont hold water... the catholics give children wine as the blood of christ, but that's done only one day a week, during sacrament. openly smoking joints on the steps of the cannabis ministry any given day of the week, or receiving your "blessed pot" and smoking it where ever under the guise of holy sacrament doesn't count as part of an organized church, and i do emphasize the word ORGANIZED!

damon polta's picture

look people, here's the deal.

i was interning on a lettuce farm known as friendly aquaponics in hawaii, unlucky for me is was owned by 2 of the members of the green 14.

i was present for the 2nd and 3rd raid of their farm. i was there at first to intern, but because momma didnt raise no dummy i was put in charge of lettuce production and harvesting logistics after only 2 months on the job, guess im a fast learner.

what it boils do to with roger is this.

1. for all of you people pissing and moaning about how much time he's spent in jail without a conviction, stop it. what you're not being told in all of your liberal independent papers is that roger, and the other members of the green 14, have asked for a delay of trial at each and every court date. by my count this has happened 4 times. if roger would have manned up from the start, and gone to trial like he soooo openly says that he wants to, this trial could have started a year ago at the first trial dat, or in april at the 2nd, or in july at the 3rd, or in oct at the fourth given trial date. he has many many chances to bank in on his right to a speedy trial.

2. for those of you crying about him not getting bail. he was a repeat offender of federal laws with no signs of quitting his antics. they revoked his bond because of the simple fact that every time he was raided he went back to commercially selling pot.

3. for those of you kicking and screaming on the floor about him not being able to afford a proper lawyer because he's been in detainment for so long... well, if his job before getting arrested would have been a legal one, he could have put his house and all of his belongings into a liquidated assets fund and cashed in on them... but, since everything he had was attained through the cash flow provided in his illegal drug trade, the government confiscated it, which is well within the governments rights. oh, and i forgot to mention, if he couldnt afford the best lawyer possible, then how is it he fired the first guy and found a new one, all while being behind bars?

4. for those of you sobbing over 1st amendment rights to freedom of religion.... the freedom to practice religion is bound by united that federal law in such a way that if your religion requires you to break any of the federal laws, it is not eligible to become an actual religion. mayan, and native hawaiian religion would not be allowed to be practice due to the use of human sacrifice, a.k.a murder. those eastern religions that require women to follow 10ft behind their husbands or else get beat, that's not considered a religion either, but it is considered spousal abuse. hell, even mormonism is being brought into question for it's stance of polygamy... and those guys basically own an entire state!

5. and for those of you all up in arms about it "just being insignificant pot" and i swear to god that's how it's being publicized in some articles, the dude and his cronies were caught with over 5000 plants at one time. that's not even factoring in the amount of weight he had pushed previous to his arrest.

what it boils down to is this. even while behind bars roger christie is bending the weak minds of his followers by playing a mix and match game of constitutional amendments as to which ones he feels like following at any given time or best suit his needs. the liberal media would have you think that the united states federal government is dashing the rights of roger, but really, his elongated stay behind bars without a conviction is an act of his own doing. this is being done to confuse the general public to think that he is in fact in prison without conviction, which is unconstitutional, but.... and this is a big damn but, he is was only denied bail, and that means being forced to stay in jail until, and through the duration of his trial, again, the fact that he's been sitting in jail with a thumb in his butt having yet to go to trial is of his own doing.

so i suggest that everyone takes a step back, drops their doobies, and starts actually reading into things before they start spouting off their reiterated misinterpretations of the constitution, and stop repeating everything you hear or read through the liberal media... chances are they are reporting from a faulty premiss to begin with... which makes them barely credible at best...

i've fired off these key points on many other forums, mostly liberal papers that cant seem to get the story right, and have been booted from just about every single one because when the truth of the matter has come out through my finger tips, none of the hippies can form an actual rebuttal and all of my comments get deleted.

i hope you've enjoyed, and now i'll take a bow.

Hello Paul,

Too bad you didn’t contact me with your defense of Christie in advance of your public attack on NORML...

Your public attack on me at High Times for pointing out the victims of Roger’s ‘ministry’ and his obviously misleading legal ‘advice’ is regrettable...especially coming from someone like yourself with such a well-known and documented ‘checkered’ history in this movement (ie, this past year you bounced numerous checks at NORML...how would you like NORML to promote that in the courts, online and in the cannabis law reform community?...or Bruce McKinney’s terrible experience with you?...or....there are so many others that will line up against you in OR/WA/CA/MI/CO for their bad experiences with you...well, you get the picture).

We have a file here in NORML’s archives longer than my arm documenting and complaining about you and your many ‘reform’ schemes...going back to the 1980s.

Speaking of files...how would you like a movement spotlight on the fact that you don’t really operate a ‘Foundation’...and that the IRS has publicly rebuked you by revoking THCF’s non-profit status?

http://blog.charitynavigator.org/2010/03/from-time-to-time-irs-does-revoke.html

I can live with criticizing an infamous ganja grifter and helping his abandoned (and naïve) victims, can you live with people knowing about you and your ‘checkered’ past? (Paul, since you claim to care so much about THC Ministry/Roger, should NORML refer his $250 ‘religious defense kit’ victims to you after their checks were cashed by the ‘THC Ministry’ and they get busted and or/sentenced to prison? Will you help them and their claims of ‘religious need’ for cannabis or do you only care about publicly defending Roger’s greed, legal delusions and self-absorption out in la-la land Hawaii?)

First off, unless you have been on the "inside', you have no idea what you are talking about. I’ve had my share of ‘personal’ time and experiences behind the scenes of “Christieland” to have learned Roger is an opportunistic PREDATOR masquerading as “Minister”, pimping out cannabis females at the highest bidder. Christie maintained a lifestyle on crime , but lacquered in a thin veneer of respectable professionalism and knowledge. His sociopathic personality has an influence that can distort your judgment and perceptions giving an illusion of false security, all the while vampiring your generosity, risking your finances, personal property and other assets Roger deems useful for his ultimate “service to self” agenda….and all with a big, “God that’s great for Me, Me, ME” smile!

Roger has conned and exploited an apparently very naive and gullable Hilo community for decades, especially the female population. Wake up SHEEPLE and smell the bullshit! You have been hoodwinked by a ‘Grade B’ actor.

Christie is an arrogant, delusional false prophet. He once told me the only reason he got into cannabis activism was because he could get alot of women!!.. His mother would pay off the girls who came crying to her because Roger "borrowed" their money and would not pay them back.....Has Roger said he is sorry to his "current" girlfriend or any of the "CREAMED 14 for the mess he has gotten them in??? NO, he is too self absorbed to care!!!

Roger is a FRAUD!

The US Govt is the scam. Their self promoting bogus "law" against a God given plant is the crime and you obviously have an agenda here which is to tarnish with outlandish claims a honest Canabis Sacrament Minister.

First off, unless you have been on the "inside', you have no idea what you are talking about. I’ve had my share of ‘personal’ time and experiences behind the scenes of “Christieland”

The premise here is flawed as your personal time is in your head.

Fed scum afraid of the truth.

to have learned Roger is an opportunistic PREDATOR masquerading as “Minister”,

Roger's religious convictions and his Ministry is his own Testament, he performed many ministerial functions and was licensed by the State of HI.

pimping out cannabis females at the highest bidder.

WTF is this. your mind is in the gutter.

Christie maintained a lifestyle on crime ,

No, he lived a life of a Cannabis Sacrament Minister who walked the walk...

but lacquered in a thin veneer of respectable professionalism and knowledge.

Yeah sure...

His sociopathic personality has an influence

Sounds like a revealing insight into your own mental illness.

that can distort your judgment and perceptions giving an illusion of false security,

Do you read what you write before you post the non sensical psycho bable ramblings?

all the while vampiring your generosity, risking your finances, personal property and other assets Roger deems useful for his ultimate “service to self” agenda….and all with a big, “God that’s great for Me, Me, ME” smile!

Whatever....

Roger has conned and exploited an apparently very naive and gullable Hilo community for decades,

Oh, really... more of the same baseless slander....

especially the female population. Wake up SHEEPLE and smell the bullshit! You have been hoodwinked by a ‘Grade B’ actor.

Weak emotional gender appeal....

Christie is an arrogant, delusional false prophet.

More of the same, very creative of you....NOT!

He once told me the only reason he got into cannabis activism was because he could get alot of women!!..

yeah, right....

Dude, get a real job. Tho protest est to loudly!

- for truth ...... or for BS, sounds like the alcohol lobbyist are still peddling and greasing the scumbags to portray an American hero for the Cannabis Religious group while his trial is about to get ramped up.

...I urge all free thinking Americans to support Roger and his defense for the last Marijuana trial!!

The whole thing reeks of big pharma and slimy LEO's and in bed together trying to justify a major failure with the arrest and attack of the THC Ministry and it's proponents.

This plant is on page one of the bible and is the Holy Spirit in deed.

Wake up and smell the herb, it is in the Holy Annointing oil receipe of Exodus 30 and the 10,000 year old genus of the healing plant.

Roger, we lift you up to YHWY, the almighty I AM and pray for you continued support during these trying times and for your safe release to society.

The fact that due process of law was suspended says it all, huh?

As for the nonsensical, factually-inaccurate, anonymous rant against Roger posted here -- simply read the NIDA report posted on the THC Ministry website to see what the effect of limiting marijuana availability is -- a hard drug epidemic.

Paul,
I couldn't agree with you more!

It is dismaying that NORML would choose to focus limited time and resources denigrating its own community and creating schisms instead of building a viable coalition for political change.

Norml should be acting as a unifying body and not one causing dissent. When Norml becomes the latter they become a redundancy that the cannabis movement can no longer afford.

Fact is, Roger Christie was scaling up handouts of free pot to minors and homeless mentally ill, among others, and that fueled a gang war over downtown Hilo turf. See news reports from early February 2010. Assaults, thefts, and muggings were on the rise and people were afraid to go downtown or walk around alone. Almost anyone with enough cash could buy high grade marijuana at the bayfront Ministry, no questions asked. The Feds first raided there in March 2010 after numerous complaints from neighbors and local merchants to law enforcement officials. Roger Christie may be nonviolent but he is certainly deranged. He has proven that he is a criminally irresponsible practitioner of his own self-proclaimed religion. He is a real danger to the community and a serious threat to the local economy. Marijuana is poison not panacea. The Green 14 are felons not heroes. The justice system will find them guilty.

TTD's picture

The government spent over 2 years with 13 agencies on this investigation/witch hunt and ended up with a little over 2 pounds of marijuana. What a joke, this whole puppet bust and trial are. That was not done because of complaints from the community, Roger was there for many years. This was done to silance a powerful voice for change, to many people were lisening and after Roger helped pass the Lowest Law Enforcement for Cannabis voter initiative the government decided he had to go and they plotted/conspired to get him. I live in Hawaii county and have known Roger for almost 30 years. Everything you say about Roger is a lie. Don't be so sure they will be convicted although that is why they did this federally so they could get the trial out of Hilo because they knew he would win in Hilo. This case will drag on for years and likely end up at the Supreme Court. During that time the marijuana laws will be relaxed and rewritten. If marijuana is removed from schedule 1 as is very likely that may mean these defendants and many other are being persecuted by a law that never met its own defined parameters. That could also become an issue.

There are many unknowns but one thing is for sure you have no idea what you are talking about. True to your reefer madness mentality you might as well blame the tidal wave that hit Hilo on Roger also it makes as much sense as your other false accusations and fabricated illogic

notwithstanding's picture

Maybe if you quit doing drugs, you could handle the truth. Children in the community were being fed marijuana-laced cookies and candies obtained from the Ministry by their parents. The developmental consequences of such early exposure are severe. The Ministry kept people like you stoned and oblivious to reality.
