TheDetroitBureau.com reports that instead of the traditional large V-8 engine found in American sports cars, GM will go with a smaller, but still powerful European-style engine.
The Detroit Bureau writes:
GM has approved the use of a very European-style V-8 that will be only slightly larger than 3 liters in displacement. The engine will be an overhead-cam, rather than traditional overhead-valve design, using a dry sump oil system that’s particularly well suited to high-performance road courses rather than straight-line acceleration. The engine is expected to feature a narrow 80.5 mm bore and a long stroke, more like a Ferrari or Lamborghini powertrain than the approach used for traditional Motor City metal.
A "very senior GM executive" also confirmed that the new engine will be turbocharged, and will deliver in excess of 400 horsepower. This stacks the Corvette up with such cars as the Porsche 911 and Lamborghini Gallardo.

GM has been guarded in its comments about the next Corvette, only to say it will be "completely different" from the American sports cars that have come before it. GM hopes to "target a very different sort of buyer for the next Corvette. Let’s face it, the current customer is getting old," according to insiders.
While GM is looking ahead in technology for the engine, it might be looking back for styling. There are reports that the new Corvette could feature the split window of the 1963 Corvette -- a highly collectible model.
