According to HoopsWorld, the Los Angeles Lakers are bringing Euroleague legend Ettore Messina on board to join Mike Brown’s staff as a full-time consultant.
Messina’s hiring is the latest in a surprisingly busy offseason for the Lakers.
After the departure of Phil Jackson, L.A. chose ex-Cleveland Cavaliers coach Mike Brown to fill the void – a move that garnered mixed reactions to say the least. Then, Jim Buss -- who has taken a de facto boss role with the club -- gave Brown the free reign to hire his own stable of assistants and consultants, which effectively killed any chance of Brian Shaw’s return to the purple and gold. And, of course, that’s to say nothing of Kobe Bryant’s role in all this.
Messina, for what it’s worth, is no novice to the sport of basketball. Named the Euroleague Coach of the Year in 2006 and 2008 with CSKA Moscow -- and a six-time recipient of the same distinction in the Italian League -- he brings a plethora of international experience that should add some pizzazz to Brown’s typically boring offensive gameplans.

Needless to say, though, Lakers fans who weren’t sure what to expect come next season aren’t going to sleep any easier knowing that Brown’s offensive consigliere is an unproven talent from overseas.
