Natalee Holloway's Mom Breaks into Prison, Confronts Joran van der Sloot

| by Kate Wharmby Seldman

The mother of missing teen Natalee Holloway sneaked into a Peruvian prison to confront her daughter's suspected killer. Beth Holloway-Twitty took a camera crew into Miguel Castro Castro Prison in Lima, where Joran van der Sloot is being held in connection with the murder of 21-year-old Stephany Flores.

Holloway-Twitty was accompanied by a Dutch journalist who is helping her investigate the disappearance of her daughter, Natalee Holloway, who went missing in Aruba in April 2005. Reportedly, van der Sloot would not answer any of the questions Holloway-Twitty asked him while she was there.

John Q. Kelly, Holloway-Twitty's attorney, spoke to Meredith Vieira on the Today Show after Holloway-Twitty's prison break-in, saying she never told him she was planning on entering the prison and confronting van der Sloot. "I think she knew if she asked me what I thought, she might not like the response," Kelly told Vieira. When asked how she got into the maximum-security prison, Kelly said, "I have no idea." Holloway-Twitty wasn't arrested for her actions: she was simply asked to leave.

What, if anything, did van der Sloot reveal to Holloway-Twitty during her impromptu visit? Kelly says he can't be sure until Holloway-Twitty gets back to the U.S. and contacts him - but that information-gathering was not her sole objective. "

I don't think [the purpose of Holloway-Twitty's visit] was to get answers out of him," Kelly said. "I think it was to deliver the message that he might be in Peru, but she hasn't gone away. She's determined to get answers, and she wants to bring Natalee home."

Van der Sloot has confessed to trying to extort money from the Holloway family in exchange for details about what happened to Natalee. He has also confessed to being involved in Natalee's death, but later retracted these confessions. He signed a written confession admitting to murdering Flores in Peru, but now is trying to retract that statement as well.
