Steelers Mendenhall's Bin Laden Comments Shouldn't be Glossed Over

| by

Yesterday our fearless CEO, Louis Maione, gave us some introspective opinion on Rashard Mendenhall asinine comments and I have two cents to offer on this topic as well.

The greatest thing about the United States of America is freedom. You are free to live your life the way you wish, go where you want to go, and do what you want to do. For the most part, you can even feel free to say what you want to say, pretty much whenever you want to say it. Even if what you have to say is inane. See Rashard Mendenhall.

The death of Osama bin Laden, the world’s Public Enemy No. 1, has been celebrated by Americans everywhere. It is a bit strange for a Christian nation, based on many religions of forgiveness even for the most heinous and disagreeable crimes against humanity, to celebrate anyone’s death. However, it is also catharsis. The United States suffered one of the most unthinkable tragedies on Sept. 11, 2001, and those who had loved ones in the World Trade Center or the Pentagon can never get those people back. They are scarred for life, as are any of the sane human beings who watched those tragic events unfold on their television or in person.

So Pittsburgh Steelers RB Rashard Mendenhall, for whatever reason, decided to hop on his Twitter account Monday and post these snippets:

“What kind of person celebrates death? It’s amazing how people can HATE a man they have never even heard speak. We’ve only heard one side…”

OK, I get the first sentence. If you are truly a Christian, at some point during your jubilation, you’ve likely taken a step back and wondered that very same thing. It gets murkier in the second sentence. We’ve seen several audio and video tapes of bin Laden ratcheting up the hatred of American and the west, with his minions eating up the propaganda. In the third sentence, we’ve only heard one side? Oh, you mean the part where YOUR country was viciously attacked and thousands of YOUR fellow citizens were killed in a senseless act of sheer terrorism? That part?

Mendenhall continues to dig himself deeper throughout the day:

“For those of you who said you want to see Bin Laden burn … I ask how would God feel about your heart?”

Well, again, this makes sense based upon most sane and rational Christian beliefs, but again, what the hell? Perhaps Rashard would like to take his football and go live in Afghanistan or Iraq if it is so bad here. See how people enjoy his contrarian views over there.

As a lifelong Cleveland Browns fan, it wasn’t like I was ever going to buy a Rashard Mendenhall jersey, and/or Steelers paraphernalia anyway. Well, maybe a Terrible Towel to burn, but anyway. But I think more people need to let this clown know how they feel. Again, freedom of speech is a good thing. And no doubt Mendenhall will have his staff of associates try to release a statement candy-coating his silly statements with your standard political correctness.

I am just glad Mendenhall and Twitter wasn’t around during other events in history. Here are some of his potential tweets:

“Seriously, tea is delicious and the taxes aren’t THAT bad. Long live the queen.”

“Man, they killed that cat outside of da jail. He was set up and didn’t kill Kennedy.”

“We really need to understand A.H. and his disdain for the Jews. We haven’t heard both sides of the story.”

“Those Japanese pilots work with precision. What kind of person celebrates the demise of another nation?”

“Don’t listen to him Mr. Gorbachev. Keep that wall up if you want to.”

Rashard Mendenhall is a douche. (Can I say that?)
