Rep. Jackie Speier Scolds Republicans for Lavish Trips While Trying to Cut Food Stamps (Video)
Rep. Jackie Speier (D-Calif.) scolded Republicans, who want to cut food stamps for the poor, but take lavish trips on taxpayer money, on the House floor today.
House Republicans have introduced a bill that would cut the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), affecting millions of Americans.
At one point during her speech, Rep. Speier held up a steak, bottle of vodka and some caviar (video below).
“Some [House] members travel to foreign countries under the guise of official business. They dine at lavish restaurants, eating steak, vodka and even caviar. They receive money to do this. That’s right, they don’t pay out of pocket for these meals,” said Rep. Speier.
She didn't call out any Republicans by name, but RawStory.com reported that she was probably talking about Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa), who recently traveled to Russia.
“[A House] member was given $3,588 for food and lodging during a six-day trip to Russia. He probably drank a fair amount of vodka and probably even had some caviar. That particular member has 21,000 food stamp recipients in his district. One of those people who is on food stamps could live a year on what this congressman spent on food and lodging for six days,” stated Rep. Speier.
She also mentioned how the CEO of Panera Bread tried to live on food stamps for a week, but added: "I wonder how many of my Republican colleagues would want to cut food stamps if they had taken the SNAP Challenge."
