Rep. Phil Gingrey (R-Ga.) reportedly lamented his $172K salary during a closed-door meeting with fellow Republicans about Obamacare.

According to the National Review, Rep. Gingrey complained that congressional aides “may be 33 years old now and not making a lot of money. But in a few years they can just go to K Street [and become a lobbyist] and make $500,000 a year. Meanwhile I’m stuck here making $172,000 a year.”

His net worth is estimated to be between $3 million and $7.6 million, noted USA Today, while the median income in Georgia is $49,736.

Rep. Gingrey later told the National Review that he couldn't recall exactly what he said, but did tell the conservative publication: “I was engaged in a dialogue with some members of our conference who truly believe that Congress should get special treatment. And some also believe that staff members should get special treatment. I happen not to believe that.”

The underpaid congressman and his fellow Republicans were discussing whether or not to oppose an existing exemption that Congress currently has from Obamacare.

Rep. Frank Lucas (R-Okla.) allegedly told the GOP group that cutting the exemption would cost him 7 percent of his pay and added: “Before you support this, go home and talk to your wife.”
