2010 MNF Preview: Chargers at Chiefs

| by

The San Diego Chargers who seem to be one of the AFC favorites every year now look to show that there is life after Pro Bowlers Vincent Jackson, Marcus McNeill and LT as the rebuilding Kansas City Chiefs open up their renovated stadium looking to become a factor in the AFC West.

The Chargers will depend on heavily former Fresno State sensation, rookie RB Ryan Mathews, to produce like the LT of old. With many experts picking Matthews to win the NFL ROY, that may actually not be such a bad idea. Down the field, expect Philip Rivers to target familiar faces Antonio Gates and Malcom Floyd. It remains to be seen how big if a factor newly acquired Patrick Crayton will be given he was just acquired from the Cowboys a week ago.

On defense, with Antonio Cromartie (and his extended family) now in NY, the Chargers need Shawne Merriman more than ever, to prove that he's fully back to pre injury form and pressure the QB.

The Chiefs now appear to have completed their attempt to reconstruct the New England Patriots franchise. GM Scott Pioli who came to Kansas City from the Patriots front office before last year brining starting QB Mat Cassell with him, has now brought in former Patriots offensive coordinator and Notre Dame head coach, Charlie Weis and former Patriots defensive coordinator and Cleveland Browns head coach, Romeo Crennel

It's the Jamaal Charles show in Kansas City these days as he appears to be KC's next great Fantasy Football running back following Larry Johnson and Priest Holmes. Former Jets RB Thomas Jones who seems to get better with age has now rushed for 1,000 yards in his last five seasons will spell Charles creating a formidable on1-2 punch.

If KC is going to win this game it will be the 3rd down scrambling of Cassell and the running of Charles and Jones that does the trick as they will need to keep Philip Rivers and Co. off the field. Rivers is 20-4 in his career against divisional opponents and that's no accident.

This is a 10:15pm EST start so if you are on the East coast and have to go to work Tuesday, it's going to be tough to stay up, however former Tennessee standout, rookie Chiefs safety Eric Berry, might just grab your attention enough to do it with a few bone jarring hits. - Mike Cardano
