During the UFC on Versus 4 post-fight press conference, Pat Barry made no excuses for his knockout loss to Chieck Kongo.
“The second time when he folded backward over his legs, I can almost recall Dan Miragliotta kind of touching my arm, he was so close. So for a split second, I thought, ‘This is it.’ I mean, the way that he was falling around from the punches, I’ve seen fights get stopped before and I was like, ‘This looks like a fight that would get stopped.’ The second one where he fell backward, in my my head, I thought it was going to get stopped. That didn’t cause me to stop trying to hit him. With all the preparation and the training and all the fights that I’ve been in before, you keep hitting him until the referee steps in. For a split second I thought he did, but that didn’t stop me from attacking.”
Agreed. Barry is making no excuses, and he’s right, he didn’t let up even though Miragliotta almost stepped in. He just got caught coming in. It happens. Ask Chuck Liddell.
During the pre-fight show of UFC on Versus 4 on Versus, Dana White discussed what happened to Nate Marquardt. “I think it’s pretty clear to the fans and everybody else that I’m pretty disgusted with Nate Marquardt. He’s been cut from the UFC, he won’t fight in the UFC ever again. We’ve got to follow these guidelines with the [HIPAA Act] and blah, blah, blah. Bottom line is, what Nate Marquardt did was bad enough to be cut from the UFC…Because of the laws in the state of Pennsylvania, Nate Marquardt’s going to need to man up and come out and tell the world why he didn’t pass his medicals,” White said. “When he does that I think everybody will understand why he was cut from the UFC.” I don’t know what Marquardt did, but whatever it was, it has to be bad to get cut and banned. PED usage is being floated around, others are pointing towards staff infection like symptoms. My guess would be use of PEDs or diuretics. Marquardt is supposed to address the situation on Tuesday so I guess we’ll all have to wait and see.
The UFC announced on their Twitter account that Japanese featherweight Hatsu Hioki has signed with the promotion. “FYI – guard-smashing savant Hatsu Hioki, a top-ranked featherweight, has been signed to the UFC roster,” officials wrote. “Welcome!” Was this even a question? Of course he was coming to the UFC. Once the fighter wants to be in the UFC and the UFC wants them, pretty much a forgone conclusion. Now let’s get him in there asap.
MMAFighting.com is reporting that Jake Ellenberger and Jake Shields have verbally agreed to meet in a fight this fall and that November’s UFC 138 event in San Jose, CA. could land the fight. Ellenberger has wanted this fight since Shields joined the UFC. This should be an interesting fight, but I’d favor Shields
According to a report from MMAJunkie.com, Strikeforce has replaced Evangelista “Cyborg” Santos, and now Paul Daley will meet Tyron Woodley on the Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Henderson card. This is a real good replacement. I still want to see Daley/Cyborg, but Woodley jumping in? I’ll take it.
