MMA: Silva Destroys Sonnen, Okami; Phil Davis Better than Evans?

| by Sports Nickel

In an interview with O Globo, Anderson Silva questioned Yushin Okami’s choice for training partners, and ripped Chael Sonnen as well.

“You have to find the best people to train with, and I think [Okami] chose wrong. I’d never align myself with a loser, a loser in every sense. He didn’t win the fight [between us] and got caught doping…and is suspended from the UFC. You want to be a champion? Get with good people, with winners. Moreover, Sonnen wasn’t a tough opponent for me. I was injured with cracked ribs and fought five rounds. If I hadn’t been injured, the fight would have been different.”

Silva ripping someone? That’s rare, but can’t say it’s not warranted. Everything he said about Sonnen is true, and I fully expect him to destroy Okami when they fight this August.

Phil Davis told Tatame.com that he thinks he’s a better wrestler than his UFC 133 opponent, Rashad Evans. “I’ll be pretty close to a title shot if I beat him, so I should be doing really well after this win…Absolutely [Rashad is my toughest opponent yet]. He’s one of the biggest names I’ve ever fought, and he’s big [in the 205 lb. division]…I think he has pretty good wrestling for MMA, but I guess I’m a little bit kind of a better wrestler, but he’s good in mixing the strikes in wrestling, so it’s not bad. But I think I’m better.” Davis is still young in the sport, and may be a better pure wrestler, but this isn’t pure wrestling (though, if MMA judges had any say…). Like he said, Evans mixes up his wrestling and strikes great. Davis still has a lot to learn in that aspect.

Lyoto Machida told Tatame.com that he’s ready for Jon Jones if the UFC calls him. “There’s nothing yet, but it’s a great chance for me. I don’t want to create hopes, I don’t know what’s gonna happen, but if they do it I’ll get this big opportunity to restart my walk in the UFC.” Not that I think Machida deserves to fight Jones, but I’d still like to see it. Rampage will have first crack should his hand be fit to fight though.

MMAJunkie.com is reporting that Japanese featherweight Hatsu Hioki turned down an offer to fight featherweight champion Hiroyuki Takeya at DREAM.17 and will vacate his Shooto lightweight title. Hioki is headed to UFC 131 as a guest, and all signs point to contract negotiations. Well, him vacating is title and coming to watch a UFC event pretty much means he’s all but signed. And that’s a great thing. He’s a top 10 featherweight and will be a welcome addition.

With Jason “Mayhem” Miller taking a coaching slot on The Ultimate Fighter opposite Michael Bisping, Aaron Simpson now meet Ultimate Fighter 11 competitor Brad Tavares at UFC 132, which comes to the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on July 2. Tavares/Simpson is just as good as Miller/Simpson if you ask me. Maybe even better. Tavares could easily end this quickly with his power, and who doesn’t like to see knockouts?
