According to Ariel Helwani of MMAFighting.com, Strikeforce Heavyweight Champion Alistair Overeem may finally have an opponent for the Dynamite!! 2010 event in Japan on New Year’s Eve next week. According to the report, former UFC heavyweight Todd Duffee has agreed to face Overeem on short notice on the card. Hmmm, ths is interesting, considering Duffee turned down a bout with Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva in Strikeforce earlier this month. So he won’t fight Silva, but he’ll fight Overeem? I don’t get it. While he COULD knock Overeem out, I highly doubt it’ll happen. And by winning, Overeem will prove nothing. The fight is pretty much worthless.
UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre has been named Sportsnet’s Canadian Athlete of the Year for the third straight year. Take that Sidney Crosby, again! GSP is the man in Canada. They should make him King.
UFC officials announced that DEEP middleweight champion Riki Fukuda (17-4) will fight “The Ultimate Fighter 11″ contestant Nick Ring (10-0) at “UFC 127: Penn vs. Fitch.” Sweet. I’ve been looking forward to Ring’s UFC appearance, and he has a decent opponent to do battle with.
Herschel Walker would like to see MMA in the Olympics, and he’d like to see the sport’s participants develop a fighters’ union. I’m not sure any of these will happen. MMA should probably be in the Olympics because nearly every fight discipline is, but I don’t know if it’ll happen. As for a union, good luck.
