MMA News: Silva's the Best, Koscheck’s Eye, UFC 127 and More

1. Anderson Silva still #1: At UFC 124′s post-fight press conference, Dana White said Anderson Silva, not GSP, is the pound for pound champ. “[Anderson Silva] is a guy who’s wiped out the 185-pound division. He really has. Not only has he wiped out a division, he beat a couple of guys at 205. That’s why this whole debate over pound-for-pound…I love Georges St. Pierre. He’s awesome, he’s a superstar and everything else. But he lost not too long ago to Matt Serra by knockout. [Anderson] has never lost in the UFC, and he’s moved up a weight class and beat two fucking tough guys at that weight…He’s knocked out all the best guys. He hasn’t lost a fight since 2006. It’s almost 2011…I love Georges, I’ve been up here talking to everyone about him for a week. But Anderson Silva is the pound-for-pound best in the world.” And I agree 100%. GSP is great. Best at 170 no question. But Silva is still #1.

2. Tim Sylvia wins again: Former UFC Heavyweight Champion Tim Sylvia was in action this past Saturday night at the Target Center in Minneapolis. Sylvia took on Arizona based super heavyweight Vince Lucero, 19-6,  at Extreme Challenge: On Target. Sylvia was too much, and after getting a full mount, won via TKO in the first. This marks Sylvia’s fourth straight victory. And nobody cares. This is a step down from his last fight versus Paul Buentello. I heard some rumors that he would be returning to “the big stage” soon, but where? Highly doubt the UFC will come calling.

3. GSP broke Koscheck’s orbital bone: Josh Koscheck’s face was visibly damaged after the first round of his five round fight with Georges St. Pierre on Saturday night, and ESPN’s Josh Gross is reporting that Koscheck in fact broke his orbital bone in the very first round of the championship fight. Koscheck was unable to fly back to the United States due to an air pocket building behind the break, which made flying dangerous. He and his trainer Bob Cook drove back to Boston. Koscheck then posted a pic of the damage on his Twitter. I didn’t think GSP broke it when I saw it, but I guess he did. For Koscheck to keep pressing on shows tremendous heart. He was outclassed, but he was there. And that eye looks disgusting. Click the pic for a larger version.

4. UFC 127 is official: The co-headlining bouts for UFC 127 are now official, as the UFC announced the fights between B.J. Penn and Jon Fitch, and Michael Bisping and Jorge Rivera, for the February 27 event from the Acer Arena in Sydney, Australia. UFC 127 will air live on pay-per-view in the U.S. due to the time difference on Saturday, February 26. Both of these fights are interesting to me. Rivera could beat Bisping and Penn could beat Fitch. Will they? Probably not. Bisping will stick and move and Fitch will lay on Penn. But we might be surprised.

5. GSP vs. Anderson Silva for the title: Dana White told that Anderson Silva vs. GSP could happen. “I don’t like guys talking about fighting each other at different weights until they’ve done what those two have done. And they both have done it. It’s hard to say no. It’s hard for me to say this fight doesn’t make sense.” He then said that GSP would get an immediate title shot. “If Georges said he was going to go to [185] and stay there, it would be for the title. It would be a superfight for the 185-pound title. I say it all the time: I truly believe that my job is to give people the fights they want to see and the fights they want to pay for. We’ll see what happens.” So then I guess it’s going to happen. Anderson will have to beat Vitor Belfort and GSP will have to beat Jake Shields. If that happens, and GSP wants to leave the Welterweight division, it’ll be signed. Don’t really want to see this, but at least it’ll be 5 rounds.
