MMA News: Parisyan, UFC 123, Rampage vs. Machida 2 and More

| by Sports Nickel

1. Karo Parisyan released, again: MMAJunkie.com is reporting that Karo Parisyan is once again out of the UFC following his TKO loss to Denis Hallman. Dana White explained saying, “A lot of people were asking why I brought him back…He was texting and calling me, and I was like, ‘I’ll give this guy one more chance. I’ll never put a fighter in harm’s way, but Karo came in here tonight and proved he can’t compete at this level anymore.” It’s good that Dana gave him another shot, but he clearly isn’t UFC caliber. He looked out of shape and just not in the fight. While the ref may have stopped it early, Parisyan didn’t look like he was going to win.

2. UFC 123 Fight Night bonuses: B. J. Penn, Phil Davis, George Sotiropoulos and Joe Lauzon each earned the $80,000 in “Fight Night” bonuses for their performances at UFC 123. Penn took home “Knockout of the Night” for his 21 second KO punch over Matt Hughes. Phil Davis took home “Submission of  the Night” for his Hammerlock over Tim Boestch, and Sotiropoulos and Lauzon took home “Fight of the Night” for their three round battle. All deserved the payout. Davis is looking better and better and Penn’s KO was up their for “KO of the Year.”

3. Rampage vs. Machida 2: Many in attendance for UFC 123 believe Lyoto Machida should get another shot at Rampage Jackson. Dana White disagrees. “No. As far as I’m concerned, and apparently, as far as the judges are concerned, Rampage won that fight. I call ‘em like I see ‘em. Rampage Jackson won two rounds. It’s a three-round fight. You won two of them, he won one of them. You’re the winner.” I agree 100%. I think Lyoto did more in the last round than Rampage did in the first two. But it was 2-1. Yes, the 10-point must system for MMA is ridiculous, but based on it, Rampage won.

4. The UFC on TV: During the post-fight press conference, Dana White revealed the future television plans for the UFC. “We’re working on two deals right now, in the next few months, that I’m very confident we’ll get done. We’ll be in over a billion homes worldwide on television. What does that mean for the sport in the next three years, let alone five or ten? A lot of people don’t realize, right now, we’re in a half a billion homes worldwide. We’re in 175 different countries. We’re pretty big right now. I envision it being much bigger. I think we’re gonna be bigger than everything.” Gotta hand it to the man, he’s doing 1000 times more for the sport than anyone before him. He also said they will probably run 30 or 31 shows next year.

5. Penn and Sotiropoulos get their next opponents: According to multiple published reports, B.J. Penn and George Sotiropoulos already have their next fights set. UFC President Dana White revealed that the two fighters will fight at the UFC 127 card in Australia on February 27, Penn meeting Jon Fitch and Sotiropoulos meeting Dennis Siver. I thought Penn was dropping back down to 155? Guess Dana has other plans. I’m pretty sure all Fitch will do is try to take Penn down. As far as Sotiropoulos/Siver, I like the fight, but I think it’s a step down for George. Guess we’ll find out.
