MMA News: Silva, Belfort, Jones and More Updates

| by Sports Nickel
1. WEC finds replacement for Bowles: According to a report from MMAJunkie.com, the WEC has found their replacement for Brian Bowles for next month’s WEC 52 event. Joseph Benavidez has stepped into his spot on short notice to face off against Wagnney Fabiano on the November 11 card. Awesome. This fight is going to be a great one. I would have loved to have seen Bowles in it, but Benavidez is a very good replacement.

2. Mario Miranda gets new contract: MMAJunkie.com is reporting that UFC middleweight Mario Miranda, has signed a new four fight deal with the organization. Miranda  was last seen losing a decision to Demian Maia at UFC 118 in August, but he took the fight on short notice, which definitely put himself in the organization’s good graces. Solid signing. He’s a much better fighter than what he showed against Maia. Taking a fight on short notice against Maia took some guts and he was rewarded.

3. Belfort vs. Silva at UFC 126: Fabiano Farah, Vitor Belfort’s manager, told Tatame.com on Friday that Belfort and Silva will meet at UFC 126. “I already spoke to Lorenzo (Fertitta) and we already agreed with this fight. We already received the contract to sign… It’ll be at UFC 126, between January and February”, Fabiano said. “Vitor is really well, training hard and very motivated for this fight. He’s with his family in Las Vegas, training with a top team, with Shawn Thompkins, and very, very motivated.” Some confusion, as UFC 126 is expected to be in January as well as UFC 125, while most expected this fight to happen on February 5. Whatever the case, I can’t wait to see it.

4. UFC poised to break UK records: According to UFC UK President Marshall Zelaznik during a conference call on Thursday to promote UFC 120, the event will set both the gate and attendance records for a UFC card in the United Kingdom. UFC 75 had the highest gate figure, bringing in $2.7 million at for Quinton “Rampage” Jackson’s Light Heavyweight Title unification bout with Dan Henderson, who held the PRIDE title. The attendance record was set at UFC 105 last November, headlined by Randy Couture against Brandon Vera, which drew 16,693 to the stands. This is surprising somewhat. UFC 120 isn’t a “huge name” card, but it does sport a ton of overseas talent, which is probably the reason for the number surge.

5. Jon Jones can beat Anderson Silva: Jon Jones talks to Kevin Iole at Yahoo.com about a potential future matchup with Anderson Silva. “I’ve bathed myself in Anderson Silva. I think I’d have an advantage going into a fight with him because I’ve studied him so much. I’ve patterned my career after Anderson. You can’t really say you know Anderson Silva, because, like me, he can pull off pretty much anything he wants to pull off, whatever he trained for that specific fight. So, you can’t know Anderson Silva, but you can understand who he is and how he thinks and how he operates.” Yeah, I don’t know about that Jon. While it would be very interesting, I don’t know if he could pull it off. He is slightly larger than Silva, but he’s no where near as good. At least not right now. And this fight will probably never happen anyway.
