MMA News: Brock Lesnar, Ultimate Fighter, UFC 130 and More

| by Sports Nickel

UFC President Dana White has announced that Brock Lesnar and Junior Dos Santos will coach the participants during the upcoming season of The Ultimate Fighter. Filming for the season begins later this month, with the show beginning on March 30 on Spike TV. The two will then face off against each other in the Octagon, but not for an interim title. “There’s no interim title,” White said. “These two are going to coach, then they’ll fight, and the winner will fight Cain Velasquez. It will be in the June pay-per-view, right after the finale. I don’t know where, I don’t know the date, but it will 100% be in June.” At first I didn’t get it. Lesnar doesn’t strike me as a coach and Dos Santos’ English is shaky at best. And it’s not like these guys hate each other. The fight, yes, makes sense. But the coaching jobs struck me as odd. However, if Dana asked Brock to play an ultimate heel, ala WWE, this season could be the best yet. Lesnar could make Dos Santos hate him and start the fireworks. I guess we’ll find out.

According to a report from MMAFighting.com, Strikeforce is targeting a Light Heavyweight Championship fight between Rafael “Feijao” Cavalcante and Dan Henderson for their March 5 event in Columbus, OH. The bout has not yet signed, but all parties are hopeful that an agreement will be reached by the end of next week. I guess this fight makes sense. Henderson knocked out Babalu in the first round, and I don’t really see anyone else on their roster that should challenge Cavalcante. I think Strikeforce is just desperate for Henderson to hold one of their titles. Just my opinion, but it sure looks like that.

Heavy.com is reporting that the UFC is targeting a bout between Pettis and Clay Guida for either UFC 130 in May or UFC 131 in June. I like this fight. It will show if Pettis is indeed ready for a title shot. Guida is no joke, but I have full confidence that Pettis will get his shot.

UFC President Dana White said that should Mark Hominick defeat George Roop at UFC Fight for the Troops 2 on January 22, he will get the shot at Jose Aldo’s belt. This is the only fight I can see that makes sense for Aldo. Hominick is looking great as of late, and with Josh Grispi losing, he more than deserves a shot.

Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker told Ariel Helwani at MMAFighting.com that believes Gina Carano will be back in the cage this year after her movie debuts in April. Not that I don’t want to see Gina Carano, I just don’t want to see her in a cage. I just can’t stand women’s MMA. Sorry. Next!
