Michele Bachmann Slams Michelle Obama Over Tax Breaks for Breast Pumps

| by Kate Wharmby Seldman

Minnesota Congresswoman Michele Bachmann is scoffing at First Lady Michelle Obama's support for tax breaks on breast pumps.

The IRS said last week that it would classify breast pumps as medical expenses, allowing them to be tax-deductible. Mrs. Obama sees this as a positive move in her campaign against childhood obesity, since research has indicated children who are breastfed are less likely to become obese.

Republican Bachmann, however, sees the IRS' move as evidence of a "nanny state." Appearing on "Good Morning America," she said that she has breastfed five babies and "strongly believe[s] in breastfeeding. But the tax code is used by government as social engineering...To think that government has to go out and buy my breast pump for my babies. You wanna talk about the nanny state? I think we just got the new definition of a nanny."

Bachmann also said Mrs. Obama's support for tax breaks on breast pumps was "very consistent with where the hard left is coming from... For them, government is the answer to every problem."

Mrs. Obama's communications director, Kristina Schake, countered, "Breast feeding is a very personal choice for every woman. We are trying to make it easier for those who choose to do it."
