A judge has sentenced Academy Award-winner Michael Douglas' son to five years in prison on drug charges, saying it's his "last chance to make it."

Federal Judge Richard Berman handed down the sentence on Tuesday after hearing 31-year-old Cameron Douglas apologize in open court. Cameron admitted that he had ignored the opportunities he'd been given to turn his life around.

Numerous friends and family -- including Cameron's father, Michael Douglas, his stepmother, Catherine Zeta-Jones and his grandfather, legendary actor Kirk Douglas -- had all written letters to Judge Berman, begging for leniency. Michael's five-page handwritten letter blamed many of his troubled son's problems on his own fame. He admitted that he'd been an absentee father due to his acting career and revealed that his famous family has a history of drug addiction. He added that Cameron has been using drugs since age 13.

Michael wrote that since Cameron has been incarcerated, he has seen a change in his son. "Cameron has already been sober longer than any time since he was 13," he wrote. "With the plans discussed in your courtroom, a strictly supervised aftercare program, I believe Cameron would be a positive force to society and I know one of his strengths would be talking to kids, sharing the mistakes he made." Michael concluded the letter by writing, "I love my son, but I'm not blind to his actions. I so believe out of the adversity, he will be a positive citizen ... I don't want to see him break."

Cameron admitted to dealing methamphetamine and cocaine. He had faced a 10-year term.
