Medical Marijuana Support Helps Rand Paul to Victory

For people who still don’t believe that medical marijuana is a mainstream issue supported by a majority of Americans, last night’s GOP Senate primary in Kentucky provided just one more example.

Newcomer Rand Paul, son of Republican congressman Ron Paul, defeated establishment candidate Trey Grayson, in part, because of his support for medical marijuana laws.

Here’s how the L.A. Times described it:

“Grayson and his allies sought to portray Paul, a Bowling Green eye doctor, as something of a kook. They cited, among other things, his support for legalizing medical marijuana […] But the criticism served mainly to rally Paul supporters — many of whom backed his father for president in 2008 — and helped reinforce his image as a political outsider.”

If this can happen in conservative Kentucky, it can happen anywhere. Politicians of all stripes need to realize they have nothing to fear by supporting compassionate laws that protect seriously ill patients—and in fact, much to gain.

As someone who watched both her parents suffer from chronic pain and eventually both died from pain pill usage, one liver failure and the other one an OD...And now being a chronic pain patient myself understand the need for the legalization of marijuana ...I refuse to let my children see me popping pills, and taking the chance of an OD for my children to clean up the mess...Not to mention they do nothing for pain relief, they just make you forget its there temporarily...What a crock of crap!!!! the DRs tell you to take his pill and that pill and eventually you otake more and more eventually leading to severe addiction...I think we outta make pot legal and outlaw pain pils, ciggs, and alcohol ..BTW i am a smoker, but If tobacco causes cancer why is it still legal...THANK GOD, WE THE PEOPLE ARE TAKING BACK OUR GOVERNMENT AND MAKING THEM WORK FOR US NOT VISEVERSA!!!!

I have admired Ron Paul for many years and I am happy to see Rand getting a good start. The thing many people (democrats and republicans ) miss is that the Pauls are for freedom . We should be free to smoke marijuana , free to say what we want, free to make mistakes, as long as we do not harm anyone else. Listen carefully to what he says, before accusing RP of being a kook or a racist or anything else horrible the narrow-minded will come up with. When they accused him being against the civil rights bill , they left out that he never said that. He is just for everyone, EVERYONE having equal rights and freedom.

I'm certainly glad to see any politician embrace MMJ and am a fan of Ron Paul , but Rand is ass-backwards in his views of civil rights as he expressed last night on MSNBC. He was directly asked if he supported the civil rights movement and he had the gaul to say he was opposed to some desegregation , for example, forcing restaurant owners to serve minorities , which was the crux of the civil rights movement! Just because he is pro- medical marijuana , I cannot blindly support him just because I'm also pro-mmj. Go home Rand! the LAST thing we need is another bigot with political power. F U !

they all sound good , some feet dont follow.

If hes on the same page as Ron Paul he is " kookie" enough to realize the drug war is a waste.

I guess there are enough boomers out there who have not been convicted of possession/cultivation/distribution and can still vote .

sometimes politicians have to be specifically asked their stance on cannabis .

ill vote for the one who supports MMJ

We have been arrested , jailed, fined, beaten and had our property taken from us. Now is the time we stand up and make our voices heard! Show your support by joining our peaceful rally in Washington D.C. on Wednesday, 4/20/2011. Whether you are for the legalization of medical marijuana or for the total legalization of marijuana , we need your support.

We need the politicians to CHANGE THE FEDERAL LAWS. It takes an act of Congress to change the law . We need everyone to write to your Senators, Representatives and the Whitehouse. Let them know where you stand and ask them what their position is on legalizing marijuana. Election time is just around the corner. Ask questions and vote for the people that share your view.

Don't you all wish you lived in California?

Liberal, loud, and legal .

Since you all were the first to make it illegal , if I am not mistaken. At the least California played a very big roll in making it illegal.

You all are doing your part in realizing the mistake and taking corrective actions. Keep it up out there. :D
