Japanese matcha green tea will give you the needed boost to take you through the most vigorous of Vinyasas.
It’s 5:00 p.m. I’m about to embark on my Wednesday night double dip Vinyasa classes at 6:00 and 8:00. Not sure I’ll be able to stay awake through the opening namaskars.
Option 1 : nap, tell myself to get in touch with my lunar energy and pass out. Hard.
Option 2 : reach for my tin of matcha. Matcha is Japanese powdered green tea that is used in the traditional Japanese tea ceremony. It has an incredibly high potency of the antioxidant ETCG, it boosts metabolism, lowers cholesterol, and has a higher concentration of catechins, chlorophyll, and antioxidants than blueberries, goji berries, spinach, açai berries and pomegranates.
What’s more? It’s delicious and feels great. I can’t do coffee (what Shiva Rea calls false shakti) because it jitters me out, and I don’t like to see my fingers trembling when I hit down dog. But with matcha, as it is a tea powder, you are actually ingesting the entire tea leaf and that changes the way the body breaks down the caffeine and fiber. It is assimilated into the body at a much slower pace. Think time-release capsule. It gives me the perfect amount of energy to be blissfully hoping in and out of handstand with no crash during or after class.
Despite its roots in the incredibly complex and beautiful Japanese tea ceremony, matcha is surprisingly easy to make and can take less time than a cup of coffee or tea. And really, what better time is there to celebrate the intricate beauty of Japanese culture?

Fresh Squeezed Bliss
2 oz fresh squeezed OJ or almond milk
1/4 teaspoon matcha
Put ingredients in a small jar or cocktail shaker, shake until green.
Wakefulness in a cup
1 cup coconut water, almond milk, hemp milk, etc….
1/4 teaspoon matcha powder.
1/2 tablespoon raw cacao
1/2 tablespoon maca root
splash of agave
Put all ingredients in blender or cocktail shaker, mix until green.
