| by Denise A Justin

In Dept. 100, Los Angeles Superior Court, on June 22, 2011, Nativo Lopez, President of the National Mexican American Political Association (MAPA), pled guilty to one count of Voter Registration fraud, violation of Election Code Sec. 18100(a), which reads:

(a) Every person who willfully causes, procures, or allows himself or herself or any other person to be registered as a voter, knowing that he or she or that other person is not entitled to registration, is punishable by imprisonment in the state prison for 16 months or two or three years, or in a county jail for not more than one year.

Nativo was represented by Deputy Public Defender John Powers and agreed to dismissal of the remaining seven felony counts against him. The terms of his sentence are 10 days in County Jail, three years probation, and 400 hours of community service. He was granted five days time already served in County Jail and five days credit, so that no further incarceration will be required.

This judge looked an inmate square in the eyes and did something that left the entire courtroom in tears:

Additionally, Lopez is to perform 400 hours of any community service approved by the Probation Department. The judge stated that this could include working for a political organization for which he is not employed. He also must pay $200 in restitution to the court.

Lopez was ordered to report to the Probation Department within 48 hours and the judge suggested that he do that before leaving the building.

Nativo Lopez has been the center of many public controversies and investigations. Among the most notable were claims that he misused funds granted by the CA Department of Education for English classes for immigrant students. As a result, he was recalled from the Santa Ana School Board by an overwhelming 71% of the mainly Latino voters of the district. http://www.opposingviews.com/i/nativo-lopez-does-he-speak-for-mapa-and-mexican-americans

Nativo’s current legal problems result from allegations that he registered to vote from the Boyle Heights office address of his Hermandad Mexicana Latinoamericana organization while still living in Orange County, allegedly to serve on the Board of the Green Party.

Lopez’s activities have also included advocacy for cockfighting, which he contends is a Mexican cultural tradition and an intrinsic part of the Latino economy. http://www.opposingviews.com/i/cockfighting-a-serious-crime-or-legitimate-sport
