Manny Pacquiao vs. Shane Mosley: Round-by-Round Results, Analysis

By Nick Tylwalk

We're closing in on the main event from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Manny Pacquiao and Shane Mosley are almost set to collide in a battle of two well-decorated world champions.

The Showtime announcing team of Gus Johnson, Al Bernstein and Antonio Tarver are calling the action, with James Brown hosting. Johnson says Pacquiao is totally focused, and Mosley is using all of the doubters to fuel his motivation.

The MGM Grand looks like it is packed to the rafters for this one. Official ticket sales sold out in less than two days. We'll get the American and Filipino national anthems before we are ready to get to the action. Charice sings the latter, while Tyrese Gibson handles the former. Jamie Foxx also sings "America the Beautiful" backed up by a drum and trumpet.

Looks like we'll get a few final video packages to hype up the fighters. Seems kind of late for that, but perhaps we aren't up to the contracted walk out times yet.

Shane Mosley walks out with LL Cool J in front of him doing "Mama Said Knock You Out." Sugar Shane is 46-6-1 with 39 KOs, but much of the criticism of the 39-year old fighter is how sluggish he looked while losing to Floyd Mayweather and drawing with Sergio Mora in his last two fights.

The ring walk for Manny Pacquiao starts with "Thunderstruck" by AC/DC - as usual, a tribute to the late Arturo Gatti - before giving way to "Eye of the Tiger" done live by the lead singer of Survivor. Pac-Man is 52-3-2 with 38 KOs and has not lost since March of 2005.

The tale of the tape shows Mosley with three-inch advantages in height and reach. However he is seven years older than Pacquiao, which many pundits see as the big key to this fight.

Kenny Bayless is the referee in charge of the action. Jimmy Lennon Jr. handles the introductions in his typically classy style, and we are finally ready for a scheduled 12 rounds of boxing for Pacquiao's WBO welterweight title.

Round 1

They touch gloves to start the fight. Mosley is moving his head side to side. Both men try some tentative jabs. Mosley backs off from a Pacquiao left. Good jab by Shane. Straight left by Manny. Round 9

Naazim Richardson tried to get Mosley going by convincing him Pacquiao was tiring. Not sure it worked. Pacquiao lands a left and Mosley tries to answer with a right. Shane shows some rare signs of aggressiveness. He lands a jab and scrambles to avoid Manny's punches. Pacquiao scores with a left. There's a left to the body and one to the head of Mosley. Left again from Pac-Man followed by a right hook. Shane's head snaps back as he eats another left.

Tylwalk: 10-9 Pacquiao
Parker: 10-9 Pacquiao

Round 10

Some jabs get through for both men. Tarver diplomatically says he likes both men if Pacquiao ever fights Floyd Mayweather. Here comes a flurry from Manny that wakes the crowd up for a second. Mosley complains of a head butt. Manny fires a short left. Shane throws a combo and Manny goes down. It looked like a slip but Bayless says it's a knockdown. Very questionable call. Pacquiao is fired up from that one. He wobbles Shane with a left and is tied up. That really seemed to have gotten under Manny's skin.

Tylwalk: 10-9 Mosley
Parker: 10-10

Round 11

Pacquiao has hit foot on the gas now. The fans like the new fire he's showing. One-two to the head by Manny. A right hook has Mosley wobbling again. That phantom knockdown may have been the worst thing that could have happened to Shane. Fans are chanting for the knockout. Mosley lands a hook. He also scores with a counter right while Pacquiao keeps up the pressure. Every feint by Manny has Shane twitching a lot. Combination punching sends Mosley back into full retreat again.
