"Manhattan Declaration" Aims to Use Gov't to Impose Religion

Americans United for Separation of Church and State today expressed grave concern about a renewed push by a coalition of conservative church groups to impose religious teachings on all Americans through government action.

At a press conference, Religious Right leaders and Roman Catholic bishops unveiled a joint statement criticizing laws that allow reproductive choice and same-sex marriage. The “Manhattan Declaration” indicates that participating religious leaders will defy such laws if they conflict with church doctrines.

Americans United charges that the real agenda is not protecting the religious freedom of churches, but rather attempting to impose those doctrines on all Americans by government decree.

Said the Rev. Barry W. Lynn, Americans United executive director, “This declaration is certain to be deeply divisive. These religious leaders want to see their doctrines imposed by force of law, and that goes against everything America stands for.

“The United States is an incredibly diverse nation,” he continued, “and it would be a disaster if government started favoring one religious perspective over others.”

Lynn said most Catholics and evangelical Christians do not want to see their houses of worship drawn into politics.

“I am optimistic that the people in the pews will not heed their leaders’ misguided call to action,” Lynn said. “Polls show that most church-goers do not want to see their faith politicized. But I am also well aware that religious leaders have vast lobbying power that cannot be ignored.”

Lynn noted the House version of health-care reform was revised at the behest of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops to curtail women’s access to abortion.

While you guys spend a lot of your time arguing over religion , politics and taxes , I signed the Manhattan Declaration. Arguments on both sides make sense based upon who's world view you subscribe to. However, to me, if city laws are subject to state laws, and state laws are subject to federal laws, then it makes only sense that man's laws are subject to God's laws, and not the other way around. My loyalty is to God and keeping His commandments as opposed to obeying laws of men who may be passing laws opposed to God's original design. I have no choice but to do that which is ultimately right.

By the way, in just the first week since the the document was released , there has been over 175,000 online signatures. If you look at the ManhattanDocument.org website and click refresh, you will see the number increase continually. Cool, huh?

Our forefathers were very astute about religious freedom . Prior to our written Constitution, our countries immigrants came to this land with one of the reasons being to break away from religious persecution which was happening in Europe at the time.
Our forefathers are on record with statements about their thoughts or beliefs on Christianity. A very, very small minority within the populace harbored the ideas on Deism and Atheism, but they too began to change their beliefs as time went by and they recognized the good that Christianity brought to the people.
Though there is no mention of the Ten Commandments as such within the documents which make up our country, it’s my belief that at the time, there was no need. Morals, Common Sense, Integrity and the belief in One God, which is the pre-essence in Christianity, were on most people’s minds and in their hearts.
Today we find that the more we remove God for the landscape in some sort of pre-amble as to say; “Out of Sight, Out of Mind”, the more we drift apart from each other. We strive to seek happiness where true happiness can not be found.
We scar our bodies, we scream and shout in order to get some form of attention, anger is on the rise , much of our society has fallen and you can’t get the honest truth in anything other than picking up the Bible.
People don’t think before they talk and then they look for excuses to justify their actions, pointing the blame elsewhere for their ignorance. In some case’s, perpetual stupidity.
I could go on, but I guarantee there will be those who still won’t get it.
George Washington’s farewell address said it quite well:
"Religion and morality" were the "great Pillars of human happiness, these firmest props of the duties of Men and citizens." "National morality," he added, could not exist "in exclusion of religious principle." "Virtue or morality," he concluded, as the products of religion , were "a necessary spring of popular government ."
The Manhattan Document a wonderfully written document. The statements are from the hearts and minds on those who do get it. It’s a refresher course on how it was and how it ought to be. Quite simply an honest statement based upon principals of conduct for a society with morals and the belief in God. Which by the way, is very much the way our forefathers did believe.
It’s not easy to be a Christian in a society of agonistic beliefs. Where the Truth is challenged and twisted into confusion. Especially when those beliefs are in the minority, much like the common sense displayed by many a politition in Washington, whose decisions are based upon political correctness and money . We seem to be so preoccupied with everything that doesn’t really matter. The people who wrote this document are taking a stand for something that does matter. One has to examine his own conscience from time to time and quit flying by the seat of his pants.
It’s sometimes difficult with all the noise and distractions out there, but it can be done.
And with help of the Holy Spirit, you’ll find your way back. Don’t be temped so easily, don’t be so weak or naive to believe that the right answers to life are found in the tabloids or on the television sitcoms or in reality programs which are far from reality.
You weren’t hatched, you didn’t evolve from gue from some ocean somewhere. You didn’t arrive from another planet, though one has to wonder by the chosen attire from some. You were given life and a dignity. You can choose to do what ever you decide after that but there are consequences to all actions.
Our laws are based upon the supreme laws. That being, the Ten Commandments.
The Ten Commandments are still that, and not the Ten Suggestions as some have made them out to be. They will never change by an act of man, nor will they ever not apply.
These individuals who so skillfully drafted the Manhattan Document took pains to carefully not throw together simple, politically correct, and short term propaganda, but instead, chose to carefully draft together the basic beliefs which were once shared by all true Christians but today are only too few. In so doing, they have taken a stance to remind everybody that the big picture is not about any single one of us, and definitely, not about me. But about something far greater than ourselves.
For many who read this, it will be a well past due dusting of the mind which has left many to forget the basic principals in humanity.
I signed it, and I would invite others as well, to read it, think about it and do the same.
Take a personal stance if not a political stance for what really does matter.
Life is precious. It was a gift to me. It was a gift to you as well. Who are we that think we can decide who’s to be or not to be granted the same.

And by the way, quit being rude.

May God Bless You.

I really agree with your last two sentences, I think everyone should keep these discussions civil. I also am a Christian but I'm having trouble getting the Manhattan document to agree with a number of scriptures. If you're interested, I would like to have a private discussion with you on this matter but you don't list your email address. My email address is larry@peoplescentralparty.com .

"These religious leaders want to see their doctrines imposed by force of law "

...when Barry wants HIS beliefs imposed by force of law, just like everyone else.

If Christians get their beliefs codified through the American political system, that means there were elections , debates, and bills and the Christians won. That's the way it's supposed to work!

I suspect your willingness to bow down to religious authority would evaporate very quickly if it were representing Allah. It all comes down to this

If you listen to the Focus on the Family broadcast from 11/23 it explains exactly what the Manhattan Declaration is. It is not, telling the government to impose religious teachings on all Americans . It is simply telling the government what those that sign the document will not tolerate from the government.

How is it that in this case government is being used to impose religion when government is being used to attempt to change religious views?
What happened to the conscience clause in the healthcare bill? Removed. Why? Some people dont want other (religious) people to actually practice their religion...more like state imposing on the church rather than church imposing on the state, I would say.
Since when does the state determine what/how people should worship? The state is not God, is it? Isnt this whole idea why pilgrims came to this continent to begin with, to escape very similar religious persecution?

I would like for you to remove my name from your list. I signed in on the wrong site. I was trying to get into Manhattan Declaration.com and got you site instead.
The Manhattan Declaration is exercising our rights under the Constitution of The United States to live by our conscience; and not to be forced to pay for abortions that go against our moral beliefs. We will refuse to participate in what we believe to be evil.
To do this we will take the concequences and go to jail if we have to in order to protect our rights.

Indoctrinated as a child, I am sure, having your beliefs, or what was chosen for you to believe, is your right. Forcing others to follow your beliefs is wrong. No one is being forced to pay for abortions. Allowing self determination is a part of the same constitution that The Manhattan Declaration seeks to delineate. It is an elective matter and not one for any church to impose on anyone. You can jump from the cliff if you chose, but the results might place where you fear the most, and it isn't jail. It is the fear you have been taught from birth. Many of us don't chose to live in fear.

Since the decision to have babies is a matter of choice, all related childbirth care should be treated the same as any other elective medical proceedure.

Why should I pay for the medical care of women I didn't get pregnant? If anyone has a legitimate grievance, mine is far greater than your's. Anyone who can't pay to have and raise babies out of their own pocket, shouldn't have babies to start with.

Why maternity care and childbirth should be treated as a freebee at everyone else's expense is beyond my ability to understand.
