Man Pays Doctor Bill with Pennies; Faces Charges

A Utah man showed his disdain for a medical bill by attempting to pay in pennies. Now he faces criminal charges.

According to a report from the Deseret News in Salt Lake City, Jason West showed up at his doctor's office on May 27 to dispute a $25 bill he claimed he didn't owe.

But when the staff insisted that he did indeed owe the money, he agreed to pay.

“After asking if they accepted cash, West dumped 2,500 pennies onto the counter and demanded that they count it,” said Assistant Vernal Police Chief Keith Campbell. “The pennies were strewn about the counter and the floor.”

Campbell said the incident upset the staff at the office, so they called police. West left, but police later caught up with him and gave him a citation for disorderly conduct, which carries a potential fine of $140.

Campbell said West's behavior served "no legitimate purpose."
