Maid: Boss Hammered Nails Into Me for Complaining

| by Mark Berman Opposing Views

It's not uncommon for employees to complain to their boss about their workload. But when a maid did it, she found herself getting punished -- with two-dozen hot nails hammered into her.

L. T. Ariyawathi returned to her native Sri Lanka last week after spending five months working as a maid in Saudi Arabia. When she complained of being in pain, her family took her to the hospital. X-rays showed the nails under her skin.

"She was brought in complaining that her Saudi employer drove nails into her body, and X-rays showed that there were 24 nails and a needle," hospital director Prabath Gajadeera told the news agency AFP. "There is one nail on the forehead, just under the skin."

The 49-year-old woman was reportedly too traumatized to give details of what happened, but she said her employer did it to her as a punishment for complaining.

"She still can't properly sit down and walk," Dr. Kamal Weerathunga told the BBC.

The nails were up to two inches long, and were found in her hands, feet and legs. She is expected to undergo surgery on Friday to remove them.

Around 1.4 million Sri Lankan woman work as maids in the Middle East.
