Lionel Messi has had a pretty great year. Even though he was widely regarded as the world’s greatest soccer player prior to breaking the record for total goals this past season, topping Gerd Mueller’s 85-score mark by a full six goals definitely etched in stone.
As a reward for his on-the-pitch brilliance, this week, Messi was awarded the FIFA Player of the Year for the fourth time in his illustrious career.
According to the Washington Times, Messi earned 41.60 percent of the votes for the honor. He beat out second and third place finishers, Ronaldo (23.68 percent) and Iniesta (10.91 percent), by a pretty sizable margin.
The Barca star was clearly humbled by the honor.
“To tell the truth, this is really unbelievable to get the fourth award. I am so nervous,” Messi said.
As fantastic as Messi was this season, his greatest moment of the year may have actually come off the pitch.
Here was his outfit for the ceremony:
Messi very well may come back and beat his own 91-goal record, but there is definitely no way he will ever top that suit.
