Libraries Blatantly Censoring Conservative Writers
In the fall of 2008, I wrote two articles describing how absurdly imbalanced public high school book collections are on the topic of homosexuality. I mentioned in those two articles that Deerfield High School had approximately 65 books that espouse liberal views on homosexuality and not one that espouses conservative views. At New Trier High school in Winnetka, it's even worse: it's approximately 120 liberal books to 0 conservative.
Now the organization "Parents and Friends of Ex-Gays & Gays" (PFOX) has issued a press release taking a West Bend, Wisconsin library to task for its refusal to include in its book collection any books written by or about men and women who have decided no longer to engage in homosexual acts or identify as homosexuals, while at the same time carrying numerous books that espouse positive views of homosexuality:
"Despite public opposition, the West Bend Community Memorial Library continues to stock gay books for children and teens while neglecting books by ex-gay authors.
"Many of the gay books promote homosexual behavior to youth and are the subject of protests by concerned parents, whose request to have the books moved to the adult section were denied.
"'Our requests that the Library balance some of its homosexual material for children with material written by ex-gays or with a heterosexual slant have been ignored,' said Regina Griggs, executive director of Parents and Friends of Ex-Gays & Gays (PFOX).
"'Apparently, the West Bend Community Memorial Library is not interested in diversity,' said Griggs. . . . According to its own policy, the Library has a 'professional responsibility to be inclusive, not exclusive, in developing collections.'
"'For a library to provide children's books which promote homosexuality while denying ex-gay books smacks of censorship and indoctrination of youth with a one-sided ideology,' said Griggs."
Furthermore, PFOX is asking the American Library Association (ALA) to condemn the violation of ALA principles that such censorship represents. There are two chances of that happening: slim and fat.
In July 2009, the American Library Association held its annual convention right here in Chicago. It might surprise IFI readers to learn that one of the pressing issues addressed at this convention for librarians was same-sex marriage. This issue is of such pressing concern to the ALA that a resolution was put forward that has the ALA formally endorsing same-sex marriage. I hope this disabuses the naïve among us of the delusion that the ALA is an unbiased, politically neutral organization committed to providing "leadership for the development, promotion, and improvement of library and information services and the profession of librarianship in order to enhance learning and ensure access to information for all."
Here is a "must-read" article about the event from the delightfully sardonic "Annoyed Librarian" who wrote about the resolution in his or her blog post "ALA 2009: ALA Council and Same Sex Marriage."
ALA ideologues are prepared to defend their de facto censorship practices. Their defense centers around their "Collection Development Policies" (CDP's). The term sounds so stupefyingly boring that no one thinks to look closely at them and how they actually affect library book collections--but we should.
Fortunately, two university librarians have provided cynical, saucy, and trenchant analyses of CDP's which you can read here and here.
It's not just the ALA whose bias is showing. A cursory look at the ideological biases of those who publish, review, and recommend books to school libraries and who sit on award committees will illuminate why such imbalances exist at virtually all public school and community libraries.
Secular publishing companies are largely staffed by liberals. Schools of education and departments of library science are notoriously liberal. Organizations that review and recommend books are notoriously liberal. And committees that award literary prizes are largely composed of individuals who hold liberal views on social issues, including homosexuality.
These various groups, along with English departments in colleges, universities, and high schools, are embarrassingly hypocritical when it comes to their public statements about intellectual freedom and diversity. When it comes to the topic of homosexuality, they are intellectually incestuous, politically motivated, narrow-minded, intolerant censors.
Through its de facto censorship mechanism, cunningly obscured behind the sterile nomenclature "Collection Development Policy," the American Library Association has become a corrupt, hypocritical organization committed to promulgating biased, subversive social and political views on the controversial topic of homosexuality. On this topic one thing's certain: if you're looking for intellectual diversity, stay out of your libraries.

This isnt a opinion, there is only two possible answers to this problem. Does conversion therapy work or not. Thankfully therapists and psycologists have proven the work to be very negative. But no it isnt enough for them.
>>>>>> more on the specific subject at hand
... Ok just a question, but you do know that published material that is spreading information that quite possibly is not true is called LIBEL. Libel is usually information that is used to support PROPAGANDA.
These are materials used to bend the public's opinion on a certain subject.
This isnt about critique, this is about pointing out a possible reason why to not put that material in the library.
The PFOX and other questionable groups, constantly with hold information and back up scandals in the past to produce such propaganda.
For example the Fistgate Scandal, at which people in groups such as these went to a GLSEN conference and took a conversation out of context COMPLETELY. They then told the public that gays and lesbians will form your children into promiscuis sex animals .
BTW the GLSEN is a organization to protect glbt YOUTH, and they are calling those people such horrible things.
Of course the reason why this is a scandal, is because it wasnt true. Everything they said was warped to the point that they could have made it say what ever they wanted.
THIS IS NO DIFFERENT. They are taking information and only picking up facts that helps their argument, and nothing else. WHICH IS WHY I SUGGESTED LIBEL AND PROPAGANDA.
PS: I ALSO have friends who have been in programs such as ones supported by the PFOX, never came out the same. I have first hand experience of the failure of these programs. It isnt enouph they ruin peoples lives and make people feel bad for who they are, but they also must make themselves look good to the public so they can get more victims.
They are fighting against the truth, it isnt that i have a problem with a difference of opinion, MOBY CLARKE, i just support a argument that isnt supported by propaganda.
ignorance. One person's truth is another person's lies. Who is to say what is truth and what is not? You, zman? Again, no room for discussion. All I hear today from the left is our way or the hiway, the same complaint they made when Bush was in charge. Nice and inclusive. When did people lose the ability to obtain information on both sides and make the decision for themselves? When did it become important for know-it-alls to determine they will decide what info is presented and what is not? zman and his ilk are the problem. When their ideas can not stand up to critique, they attempt to stop all discussion by name calling and yelling that they are the only ones with truth on their side. I wonder why they feel the need to yell?
Nazi Germany censored their books, so does Russia .
"whine!!!"
look ill tell you why they dont want published articles denouncing homosexuality . Because studies show that it is part of what people are, and organizations like PFOX ignores certain factors of those studies to try to make it look like what they are doing is not only working but is the right thing to do. WHEN IN FACT, the studies show the opposite and the APA and other therapists stand by the opinion that reperative therapy is harmful!
Basically the people are trying to stop you from promoting propaganda and libel. They are doing what the ALA wants, and the fact that a 19 y old can see that and you cant is just sad :)
That they are censoring, it doesnt matter what they are censoring, they are just doing it. now why would anyone want to censor a viewpoint that doesnt agree with theirs? o thats right, to squash intelligent debate.
(Sorry, I truncated my last post -- continuing)
... books which promote "ex-gay therapy" are in essence advocating the idea that it is right and proper to discriminate against GLBT persons and that such persons should be expected by society to "change" their sexual orientation or remain permanently celibate and alone.
The ideas espoused in such books are blatantly discriminatory, and books which took a similarly discriminatory approach against people of other races or religions, if they were shelved in the library, would be held in a restricted area and their used would likely be carefully monitored.
I'm not suggesting that "ex-gays" and those who advocate for "reparative therapy" shouldn't be allowed to publish their opinions, but there is no requirement that public libraries shelve every bit of spew and bile that any random person finds a publisher for. The fact that a book has been published does not by definition make it worth reading.
All i am worried about is that these EX gays, will support a book that leaves out important info just to make a point. (PFOX, NARTH) They have done it on this site, they do it on the news, and they will do it in our libraries. They are always leaving out info, that if someone gave the time to read, would probably destroy their argument.
"The great thing about statistics is that, if done right, you can make the numbers say what ever you want."
(espesially if you leave out tons of info that goes against your point)
so yah, im ok with opinions, but not ok with people saying "this is a factual book with no bias and gives you all the info". Not possible
Yes, that is a major problem with their "work" - they leave out anything which doesn't support their claims. And they leave it out in massive quantities.
LIBEL, which is the libraries right to restrict from their information bank. In most cases libel is considered a federal offense, yet i dont get why these guys never get in trouble....
Do they put books on their shelves which advocate discrimination against racial groups or suggest that people of color should content themselves with fewer rights than their white counterparts? Because books which promote "ex-gay therapy" are in essence advocating the idea that it is right and proper to discriminate against GLBT
