L.A. Passes Host of New Gun Regulations

Shortly before the Christmas break, the Los Angeles City Council passed a number of new gun regulations aimed at stemming the cities often severe firearm violence. In a unanimous vote, the Council most notably banned the sale of .50 caliber ammunition, which has been proven capable of penetrating police cars and other vehicles.

In a press conference after the vote, Los Angeles Police Chief William Bratton said of the ban on high caliber bullets, "Unless you are out trying to kill Godzilla, and I think the last time we saw Godzilla was in the 1950s, there is no need for this type of weapon."

In addition to the ban on .50 caliber bullets, the city also now prohibits dealers from selling ammunition online and allows landlords to evict any tenant who is convicted of illegal gun possession within 1,000 feet of their property, among other regulations.

The N.R.A. has stated that will will challenge some of the measures in court.
