UFC Live: Kongo vs. Barry had a little bit of everything and while many were unexpected there was one thing that shouldn’t have surprised anyone, Joe Lauzon went home with a bonus. Lauzon took on the Wolfslair trained Curt Warburton as part of the Facebook streamed preliminary card and walked away with a Submission of the Night bonus.
Lauzon (20-6) holds 16 career wins by submission but opened the fight with Warburton showing solid striking that he used to take the fight to the ground. From there Lauzon was in complete control and quickly put Warburton into a Kimura. The submission looked deep but Warburton hung in there until the experienced Lauzon readjusted into an armbar position while he continued to hold the Kimura. From there Lauzon cranked Warburton’s arm into a gnarly position, forcing him to tap out at the 1:58 mark in the opening round.
Warburton (7-3) drops to 1-2 in the UFC and his future in the promotion is in question.
The submission Victory for Lauzon was his fifth in the UFC and the Submission of the Night honors was his fourth, tying him with Demain Maia from the most all-time. Lauzon doesn’t just stick to winning one bonus, the Boston native has also won an impressive three Fight of the Night honors, giving him seven UFC bonuses overall. The seven bonus checks puts Lauzon in some rare company, as only Anderson Silva (8) and Chris Lytle (8) have more Bonuses.
