Joe Biden: Tea Party "is Not a Racist Organization"

During an interview on ABC's "This Week," Biden was asked if he thought that elements of the Tea Party movement were racist.

Biden said that while some members of the party "expressed racist views" and have made "really unfortunate comments," he "wouldn't characterize the Tea Party as racist." Biden added that President Obama also didn't believe the Tea Party to be racist.

Biden described the group as "very conservative. Very different views on government and a whole lot of things. But it is not a racist organization."

Recently, questions regarding racism have risen again in light of the NAACP calling on Tea Party leaders to disown "racist element and activities" within the movement. Mark Williams, spokesman for the Tea Party Express, responded to this with a satiric blog post critical of the NAACP. David Webb, spokesman for the National Tea Party Federation, described the post as "clearly offensive" and expelled the TPE from its ranks when it refused to remove Williams from his position.
